Burqa trap set for terror suspect

Libbi is said to have hidden in a guest room in this house
Pakistani agents wearing burqas seized al-Qaeda suspect Abu Faraj al-Libbi by ambushing his motorbike in a rural town, police told the BBC.
The man alleged to be a top al-Qaeda organiser was riding pillion and managed to run into a house where agents flushed him out with tear gas.

He has been held at an undisclosed location since his capture at Mardan, 60km (37 miles) from Peshawar.

Pakistani officials have ruled out his immediate extradition to the US.

They said he would not be handed over before being exhaustively questioned by local authorities. QUICK GUIDE

What is al-Qaeda?

US President George W Bush has called his capture “a critical victory in the war on terror”.

BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera says it is the most significant arrest since the 2003 capture of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, alleged mastermind of 9/11.

Our correspondent notes that the al-Qaeda hierarchy has always been fluid and complex and reports of him being the network’s number three are hard to confirm.

However, there have been reports that he was involved in sending messages to al-Qaeda cells overseas with instructions to carry out attacks last year.

Bike swoop

Amanullah Khan, deputy superintendent of police in Mardan, told the BBC the capture on Monday was purely the work of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence service (ISI).

PAKISTAN’S KEY ARRESTS

Omar Saeed Sheikh, February 2002
Abu Zubaydah, Faisalabad, March 2002
Ramzi Binalshibh, Karachi, September 2002
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, above, Rawalpindi, March 2003
Naeem Noor Khan, Lahore, July 2004
Khalfan Ghailani, July 2004, Gujrat
Amjad Hussain Farooqi (shot dead in September 2004)
Abu Faraj al-Libbi, May 2005

Abu Faraj al-Libbi’s Pakistan role

“This was all an ISI show,” he said. “We got to the place after hearing a few gunshots.”

He said he had recognised Libbi from photographs in newspapers.

Agents, some of whom had been wearing the all-encompassing robe worn by women in conservative Islamic families, stopped the motorbike and overpowered the driver, then fired some shots when Libbi ran away.

The suspect later emerged from the house where he had sought shelter unarmed and with his “hands up and head slightly bowed”, the policeman said.

He was frisked and only a mobile phone was found. ISI agents bundled him into a vehicle and whisked him away before police could speak to him, he added.

‘Major facilitator’

Pakistan has been a key ally in what the US calls its war on terrorism and has handed over more than 700 suspected al-Qaeda operatives to the US.

It has stepped up military operations against al-Qaeda suspects in the region, near where Osama Bin Laden is widely believed to have been hiding.

Pakistani Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said security agents had already gathered “a lot of tips” from the arrest, which meant they were “on the right track” to eventually capturing the al-Qaeda leader.

Pakistan had put a reward of 20m rupees ($340,000) on the head of Libbi in August last year.

He is wanted in connection with two attempts on the life of Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf in December 2003, in which 17 people died.

He was regarded as the prime suspect in a number of bombings in Pakistan, including an attempt last year to kill Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

Libbi was also alleged to have taken over Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s role in al-Qaeda after the latter’s capture.

In Washington, the US president said Libbi was a “major facilitator and chief planner for the al-Qaeda network”.

On Thursday the Pakistani authorities said they had arrested a number of other al-Qaeda suspects days after the capture of Libbi.

The suspects were said to have been arrested in raids in the north-western Bajaur tribal belt, near the Afghan border on Wednesday. It is not known whether the new arrests are linked to Libbi.

Re: Burqa trap set for terror suspect

may allah destroy those who arrest muslims for practicing islam. may allah destroy the tyrants who rule muslims in the name of islam. may allah destroy those who support them. may allah destroy those who work for their security services and armed forces. may allah destroy those who support these men in their actions against muslims.

Re: Burqa trap set for terror suspect

may allah destroy those who support these men in their actions against muslims.'
God help me, i will surely burn in hell...as far as you make it sound like...
and next time if your home or country need to be saved from something, go out and defend yourself, dont call on 'the tyrants who rule muslims in the name of islam. those who work for their security services and armed forces'.
'may allah destroy those who arrest muslims for practicing islam'
would you care to ask Allah to also destroy those who use Allah's name and religion to kill the unarmed, unguarded non cambatant civilians...? some Jihad eh? did the Prophet PBUH preach that!? Yes, there is anger in all muslims against suppression, but there was suppression against muslims 1400 yrs ago too, did the Prophet PBUH storm homes or attack unarmed civilians OR assasinate anyone i.e. strike on the back unaware...? any soldier knows what attacking from behind means and for a Muslim soldier it's supposed to be unimaginable. sadly not for your self assigned muslim soldiers of today though...

Re: Burqa trap set for terror suspect

prophet SAW DID order assasinatino of 2 heads of kuffar...kaab bin ashraf and abu rafi.
but the issue is not of certain acts from certain groups that are unislamic...shia killing in pakistan is not done by AQ...it is SS and other organizations...and about storming homes, attacking unarmed civillians and assasinating people...i think america and its stooges have outnumbered every single organization in the world. they are the ones who storm homes in afghanistan and iraq and kick open the door so it cant be shut after that. pakistanis do that in pakistan. the americans and pakistanis are the ones who caused deaths of so many civillians in afghanistan and wana waziristan. americans killed civillians in iraq. and about assasination...what was that act that killed sheikh ahmed yassin. and america said "we support the right of israel to defend itself".

so when taliban is fighting in afghanistan against american soldiers, it is fighting unarmed non combatant civillians? lolz. then why is taliban being hunted down? pure hypocracy. just because the god of musharraaf america hates any one it doesnt mean they are bad people. just keep that in mind before you start condeming ANY one who is against america..

Re: Burqa trap set for terror suspect

who is appreciating what the US is doing...? evryone hates the US and Bush adminsitration for their madness. they are evil. but are we going to be like them...? provided it was alqaeda that downed the WTC, what would you call that? an 'act of war' on 'combatants' 'armed' with brief cases filled with files and folders? the taliban set out to defeat the US and took up the challenge to save the Ummah. what happened to them...? what did yo want? Musharraf to do the same? and be overrun by the mighty US like the Taliban in Afghanistan or Saddam in Iraq...? if it's anyones responsibility to rescue the Ummah i think it's the oil rich arabian nations like KSA etc that should have stepped up to protest right when the war started. they didnt. why should have Pakistan sacrificed itself knowing what was coming? Mush's responsibility was to make sure his nation survived, and he did that in the best way he could have, and thank God Pakistan survives, will forever inshAllah! thank God we had Mush as our leader, God bless him. Ive see US GIs roam the streets in KSA; i could picture them in the streets of Lhr, Isl, Khi, had we not had a smart brain with guts like Musharraf. no matter what anyone says. no one could have done better. this is what i believe, for my Pakistan! what else can i say? theres been discussion on this millions of times.
doesnt Pakistan have a right to kill whoever bombs mosques, streets, markets, homes attacks the president and so on...? the license that they are 'muslims' is lame now. these days anyone can do whatever and have ppl on his side say he's a muslim fighter. the guys who rape in Pakistan or ones who murder out of enmity or those who loot homes are also muslims. are they divinely inspired too...? and above all why should any God forsaken foreigner use Pakistani soil for his madness...!?
