Burley sacked as Scotland manager

By Chick Young

**The Scottish Football Association will meet this week to discuss the future of Scotland manager George Burley.**BBC Scotland has learned that the full board will hold talks about the under-fire manager within days.

A senior SFA source told BBC Scotland on Saturday there were “no plans” to have a meeting about Burley’s position.

This followed the 3-0 defeat by Wales in Cardiff but I believe that the odds are now stacked against him remaining in charge of the national team.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith refused interview requests in Cardiff after the game and the day after the embarrassing 3-0 defeat.

The SFA president George Peat was in Azerbaijan with Scotland’s Under-21s.

But communication between the pair and the rest of the full board took place on the morning after the afternoon before, and Burley’s future will be discussed this week.

I understand that they are preparing an offer which would be put to the Scotland manager to quit ahead of the draw for the European Championship 2012 qualifiers, which takes place in Warsaw on 7 February.

Scotland’s next game is a friendly against the Czech Republic at Hampden on 3 March.

Burley, whose contract runs until 2012, succeeded Alex McLeish as Scotland manager in January 2008.

His record as manager stands at just three wins in 14 games and he failed to secure qualification for next summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
