**Scotland assistant manager Terry Butcher insists the national side are capable of keeping their World Cup hopes alive by beating the Netherlands.**The Scots must win Wednesday’s qualifier at Hampden to stand a chance of securing a play-off place.
“If you look at history, it’s been done before. Scotland have upset the odds before,” said Butcher.
“It doesn’t have to be a spectacle or a great game, it’s the result that matters and how you achieve it.”
Scotland know that a win at Hampden may not be enough to see them book a place at the finals in South Africa.
They must finish as one of the top eight group runners-up to secure a play-off place.
If George Burley’s side do pick up maximum points, they would also need Northern Ireland to fail to beat Slovakia and a draw between Slovenia and Poland.
A draw would leave the Scots on 11 points, with a play-off place unlikely and depending on other results going there way.
“History shows Scotland don’t do particularly well in double headers, but a lot of records have been broken so far”
Scotland assistant manager
Terry Butcher
The Netherlands travel to Glasgow having already qualified for the World Cup finals as Group 9 winners.
“They’ve got a very impressive record - played seven, won seven,” said Butcher. "I’m sure they’ll want an unblemished record going into the World Cup finals.
"No matter the circumstances, the Dutch always fancy playing football and fancy themselves to win.
“It will be a tall order, no matter who they will play. But it’s a lot about what we do and how we approach the game.”
Butcher said that the Scots could call upon attitude and character to pull them through such a tough fixture.
“History shows Scotland don’t do particularly well in double headers, but a lot of records have been broken so far,” he added.
“We aim to do that on Wednesday and will be going all-out to get that win.”
With James McFadden unavailable through suspension and Calum Davidson out with a hamstring injury, Gavin Rae and Graham Dorrans have received call-ups.
“There are a couple who aren’t available to play on Wednesday, so we have added Graham and Gavin to the squad, so that gives us more bodies and options in midfield,” Butcher added.

How do you rate Scotland’s chances against the Dutch
Scotland defender Stephen McManus, who was in impressive form alongside David Weir in the 2-0 victory over Macedonia, said he was relishing the prospect of facing the Dutch.
“Collectively, we know it’s going to be a hard game, but we certainly believe we can win it,” the Celtic defender said.
"It’s a one-off game and it’s at home for us, which is great. We’re lucky we’ve got players who’ve been handling pressure for four or five years.
“So pressure situations are not a problem.”
Meanwhile, striker Kenny Miller is confident Scotland can once again upset the odds and defeat the Netherlands, who lost 1-0 on their last visit to Glasgow in 2003.
The Dutch recovered from that first leg defeat in the Euro 2004 play-off, crushing the Scots 6-0 in the return.
During the present campaign, in March, the Dutch cantered to a 3-0 triumph over Scotland in Amsterdam.
“We’ve beaten France at home, we’ve gone close against Italy a couple of times and we beat Holland before,” said the Rangers striker.
“So there is no reason why we can’t do it again. You have to ride your luck in these games.”
