Burj Dubai - A Symbol of Dubai's Pomposity

Ghalib also said this (probably foresaw BURJ KHALIFA) ;

SUBB KAHAN KUCCH LALA O’ GUL MEIN NUMAYEN HOGAYEEN…
KHAAK MEIN KIYA SOORTEIN HOUNGEE K PINHAN HOGAYEEN…

WOH NIGAHEIN KIYON HOEE JAATEE HEIN YA’RAB…DIL K PAAR…
JO MERI KOTAHEEAY QISMAT SE MUSRGAAN HOGAYEEN…

YUNN HEE ROUTAA RAHA GHALIB TOW AIE AHL-E-JEHAN…
DEKHNA INN BASSTTEEYON KO TUMM…K VEERAAN HOGAYEEN !

I was there in Dubai for the grand fireworks and openeing madness
and frankly–I didn’t find anything extraordinary!

(I dont know what happened to that pathan who stayed on top of the infrastructure for six months!?)

:bummer: sorry guys my comprehension of urdu poetry is limited! :frowning:

Lucky dude !

I think after the opening of Atlantis this second best! Purtty purtttyyy! People have lived here, come for business, events, shopping etc. Once they reach home they begin mocking it!

Re: Burj Dubai - A Symbol of Dubai's Pomposity

***Gina people are not mocking the architecture but the attitude of the owners .

If u've lived there long enough , you will agree that their extreme arrogance and hostility towards foreigners especially asians borders on the vulgar. The fact that they consider themselves a class apart from the rest of the human species negates any such ventures.

They are out to prove that money can buy or build anything and their attitude reeks of egotism and self-importance and an exaggerated sense of their own worth to the extent that they went on a crazy building spree of tallest hotel , tallest building ,man made islands and now when all of it is built the very person who laid brick after brick would not even be allowed within a mile of it let alone inside it.

Re: Burj Dubai - A Symbol of Dubai's Pomposity

The tower "could have been" a finest piece ever created and people would have associated pride with the creation. However, the tower beams bloodshed of those men who went from India/Bangladesh/SriLanka etc. thinking they would achieve a better life for themselves and their families. You CANNOT look at the tower without feeling the pain of these hardworking families.

Truly very sad.

Re: Burj Dubai - A Symbol of Dubai's Pomposity

and so it is said, when the people around you are starving....make buildings

I know what you are saying, but for overwhelming majority of those ppl the pain of those working conditions was less than the pain staying in their homelands and not being able to feed their families.

I so agree with Sheyn!

100% with you....and the majority who lives there are not living coz it is an amazing place to be..only coz they dnt have a better choice. When I worked there I got paid AED1800.00, but the emirati girls who were also given the same post that i was got paid AED10,000.00!!!! For what? They didn't even do anything, only thing they did ws come to work, sit, gossip on their phones for hours..and they would do it in front of the senior management..but no one said anything to them...It is jst disgusting!!!

That's partially true and that's why those men had to leave their own countries. However, all this time there had been many videos interviewing those workers, there are so many pictures showing 50 men sleeping in one room and they looked exhausted. One man had no space so he slept in the bathroom. That picture never leaves my eyes. Their passports were taken away so they had no choice but to stay. To top it off they had TAKEN A LOAN to GET TO Dubai, not knowing what's there to come.

Wouldn't it be great if these people GOT repect back in return of all the hardwork?

I have heard the saying "All the glitter and glamour is just for showing". I think Dubai failed miserably this time, cause all the glitter and glamour is visibly bleeding.

Re: Burj Dubai - A Symbol of Dubai's Pomposity

I know what you mean, and there needs to be better regulation by GOP of the agents who take these workers abroad.

what is needed is a contract by the employer agent about wages, vacations, working hours, work conditions and living conditions..if those are not met then the agents are fined and can not be involved in this in any way either personally, or as a partner, shareholder, advisor of any company that is in this business.

The issue is that beggers cant be choosers, and GOP knows they cant protest too much because if these workers cant go abroad not only do you lose the forex coming in but also it will increase issues of poverty etc etc. The other issue is that well that this along with many other things are simply not on the priority list of the govt overlords.

Its also interesting how Humans rights groups are useless for this.
