Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

A powerful sign of the mood of the average Baloch now..

Bugti is my hero: former corps commander

By Malik Siraj Akbar

QUETTA: Former Balochistan corps commander-turned-governor Abdul Qadir Baloch announced on Saturday that he intends to contest the upcoming general elections to “carry on the message” of the late Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti.

“Bugti is my hero and his vision is my vision,” Lt-General Baloch said in an exclusive interview with Daily Times.

He said he could not stay silent watching the “exploitation” of Baloch resources by the establishment that mainly comprises senior Punjabi bureaucrats, military men and journalists. “We [the Baloch] should not live in isolation. We have to unite to forcefully snatch our rights from the centralised federation,” he said.

Gen Baloch, who has also served as director general of Rangers, said his political aspirations were inspired by the late Nawab Bugti, the Baloch tribal chieftain who was killed last year. “He is the martyr of the Baloch nation and the icon of resistance. He gave an ideology to the Baloch youth of fighting for their sahil (coast) and washail (resources). Until we fight for our rights, we will remain backward,” he remarked.

A commander at the Gurdaspur front in the Indo-Pak war of 1971, Gen Baloch condemned repeated military operations in Balochistan. “They carry out an operation against the Baloch people after every ten years. Why don’t they conduct an operation in Sindh? Why don’t they launch an operation in Punjab? Why is there no need for a military operation in NWFP? Why Balochistan each time?” the general asked.

“A national commission should be constituted to find out why there is a need for a military operation in Balochistan all the time. The intelligence agencies have been given a free hand to harass the people of Balochistan and interfere in the matters of the province. They come in plain clothes and pick up the people to take to torture cells.”

Gen Baloch said he was very concerned about the mounting anti-military and anti-federation sentiments among the younger generation of the Baloch.

He said that President General Pervez Musharraf had planned to kill Nawab Bugti much earlier. But he had warned the president of the dire consequences of such an act. Gen Musharraf did not like the advice and consequently fired him from the governorship, he said.

“As a corps commander, I was General Musharraf’s darling. But when I resisted his plans of launching an operation in Balochistan as the Balochistan governor, he suddenly turned against me. By then, he thought it was not safe to keep a Baloch as the governor,” he said.

**“Let me be very clear: It is just a handful of generals who have usurped power. The rest of the army, which comprises half of a million people, is purely serving professionally. The army must not have a political role,” he said. **

He said he did not believe that the expression of trust in Gen Musharraf’s leadership made by a corps commanders’ conference actually came from the corps commanders themselves. The corps commanders are purely professional people and they don’t endorse the military’s political role, he said.

“It is not as if I support the Baloch insurgents. I totally denounce violence. What saddens me the most is the fact that each time the military operations culminate in the death of innocent children, women and elderly citizens. Except Nawab Bugti, no sardar has ever been killed in a military operation,” he said.

He said a fifth military operation was currently underway in Balochistan. “The first military operation was launched in 1948. Then they carried out a similar operation in Mengal and partially in Marri tribal areas in 1962-67. The same thing happened in 1973 and in the 1980s. Now it is the fifth military operation going on.”

**Gen Baloch rejected the impression that the Baloch sardars were the main obstacle to Balochistan’s development. He pointed out that of the 16 MNAs from Balochistan, there was only one sardar, Yar Mohammad Rind, and out of more than 50 members of the Balochistan Assembly, there is only one sardar, Chief Minister Jam Mohammad Yousaf. **

“The rest of them come from the middle class. It is the government itself supporting the sardars. The old sardari system has totally collapsed in Balochistan now. It is nonexistent. Sardars no longer enjoy extreme powers or possess their own armies. They are all democrats,” he said.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

staying on topic

“The Army should have no role in the governance of the country” - Justice retd. Fakhruddin G Ibrahim

“They should behave like servants in uniform” - Tariq Mahmood

So true…

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

dude is no avg baloch first of all.
secondly, what a man, all this storng convictions and all tpok a backseat for so long, why was that.

or is he an opportuistic person who sees that the mood in political circles is different and maybe he can also ride the coat tails of the current events.

All it is , is a powerful sign of ..people's pursuit of power.

must have been asleep at the wheel when two operations were launched in karachi. oh wait..the dude served as DG of rangers, does he not read history. what are his sentiments about the operations in karachi, he must have been in military then as well.

sounds like a scorned ex gf :)

well maybe neo-sardars then, but come on man. The dude is dellusional.

but this type of talk may just get him teh vote from the avg jahil baloch, and support from the sardar, and sardar types. the educated population of balochistan would probably have to pick between a few bad options.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Retd General Baloch espousing ideology of Bugti, now that cud mean three things:

  1. This gentleman is working for the Govt and is being projected as a credible Baloch who can speak for the people. This is just speculation.

  2. Common Balochi including the well established elite are becoming restless, this is bad news and requires some introspection for wound healing.

  3. Just another guy looking for that 2minute fame.

Gentleman is wrong about Govt not conducting operations in Sindh, 1983 Zia even used helicopter gunships.

NWFP is under seige.

Karachi/Hyderbad have experienced wrath of the Govt.

East Pakistani (Bengalese) are the classic example.

These comparisons cannot justify the illegal actions of the various Govt against their own people under the garb of state security. Its about time that the state becomes responsible for its own actions and try to reach some sort of understanding with provincial autonomy with sincerity. More importantly, there must be some sort of truth reconciliation btw the warring parties. Sounds idealistic, maybe but achievable, South Africa is a perfect example.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Brave man to take such a stand, welll done to him :k:

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

^^

Traitor, should be shot.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

True ..i stand corrected, the mood has trickled up from the average Baloch to even the pro establishment Baloch upper elite

Delusional in what sense? he is factually correct unless you know more about Balochistan then I do? It's a reflection of the sense of alienation having spread from just dera bugti to now a generalised resentment across the board from the Baloch..all in all another thing Pakistan is going to have to deal with because of Mush..

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Its good to have such guys around... He is someone we can respect far more the Akbar Bugti... Bugti was a hypocrit, dictatator turned nationalist...

This guy is a respected former member of the establishment without the dirty Laundry of Bugti.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Although Mr. Baloch makes a lot of sense here, him saying all these things now smacks of political opportunism at best and bitterness at worst.

If he was a true soldier, a thorough professional and a man of principles he would not have accepted governorship while he was corps commander in Quetta in the first place...me thinks

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Is this dude talking about 'power' as in governing Pakistan power only? There many many levels of power, ask the villagers who got killed when going against army-men, ask police stations staff who got thrashed when they stopped army-men for traffic or other violations, ask those people whose land was usurped by an army-man, ask a common man when one party brings his army-connection, ask University of Karachi when a retired col was made incharge of Karachi, ask many other institutions where an army-men was installed to 'control/monitor', there is a reason of resentment among masses against army... its not just 'president' stupid.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Same is the case with Jamali, who is turning against the Punjabi dominated PML.

Two options to deal with Balochs: kill them all or give them their rights. Knowing previous army harkats, they might go for the former option. God forbid anyone in Punjab has to pay fair market prices for gas.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Really sick of your hypocracy bro... Maybe the MQM should stop playing the establishments chamcha if they are so concerned with Punjab dominance...

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

this is what happens when myopic policies and extrajudicial killings are used against opposition. Bugti should have been tried in the court of law. If Gen Baloch considers Bugti a hero I imagine the vast majority of baloch youth would also do the same

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

Class example of: *sau (100) chohey kha ker billi HAJ ko chaleee *

:)

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

So you believe the govt intentionally destroyed that cave killing its own army officers. If more than anything, bugti might have triggered the collapse trying to die a "martyr". If musharraf didn't assassinate him [russians did to dodayov by tracing his satellite phone signal] then i don't think he would do it then.

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

musharraf congratulated his officers at bugti's killing, this is on the record. what else do you expect from our brilliant commando who will love to kill his own countrymen and will bent backwards to appease our enemies

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

No man, all I know is that Baloch, Pathan and Sindhi are suppressed, and urdu speakers are not. akbar bugti is a hero, GM syed was a hero, ghafar khan was a hero, and altaf is not.

and they all seem to hate punjabis...but they are wrong and just a bunch of whiners and traitors etc.

not sure how I can reconcile that someone is a hero while he is a traitor and he is righeteous and asking for what is right when no one is supressing himt o begin with.

Thats what I have been told and what I have read.

But then as you said, you probably do know more than I know.

:)

Re: Bugti is my hero: says ex Corp Commander

You mean Mushi.? you are absolutely right then... 150 million people will be ready to fund you for this great cause...
