please note, that* my location is crossing of mississauga and brampton towns in toronto, canada.
:: current config ::
. budget = $1000 (CDN) .. NO WAY over.. (so taxes/shipping/hidden INCLUDED)
. machines = 5 **as i ** write, (2 functional desktops, 2 functional notebooks, 1 non-operational desktop)
. devices = 2 local printers (local/parallel/usb) and 1 scanner (local via bypassing LPT)
:: what i want after moving ::
. all laptops+desktops (so machines) be on G (or preferrably N) standard.. speed i want is 100+mbps for atleast between the traffic-controller/router and ATLEAST 2 of my personal machines, rest i can live to be on 54mbps (older, now MUCH CHEAPER standards) cuz coming from wired world, i cant downgrade..
. printers can stay local, but i want a NO-attendance solution for using either of 2 printers or scanner.. (I personally can live without this, so THATS not a big deal) so no switchboxes.
. i’m not touchy on wireless security.. i believe in giving people free acess IF they are getting enough signal strength.. (so i will NOT be using wep and mac-filtering) HOWEVER that brings me to next point:
. house i’ve bought has 4 levels (basement, garage, living room 5 steps above garage level, and bedrooms) i want FULL 100+mbps with 90% signal strength ANYWHERE in the house.. i am talking about bedrooms (particularly) and living room/kitchen level downstairs, backyard (garage level, not that big of a yard) and most importantly basement.. solid concrete+fibre glass , on top of that, covered by drywalls and suspended sealings
:::::::::::::::: based on that recommend proper dlink/cisco-based-linksys/u.s.robotics router and range extenders .. if they have wired connections PLUS wireless, awesome.. and if has a print-server, ** b.o.n.u.s!**
Get a 824 Dlink Router with print server, cost around $200 CDN (previous price was $250). Rest you can setup the networking / patching cables etc urself, shouldn't cost you much.
U wanna have ur cake and eat it too?
N is still out there, not in the "affordable" range. I always stay 1 setup behind cutting edge anyway. Plus you have a low budget.
What I would do for max effect in the house is run cables to each floor and setup a 'G' AP at each floor. Those are pretty inexpensive (I bought one a few months ago for $50 USD). Wait a bit before going for n. That's my 2 cents.
I'd still advise you to use 824 Dlink, though it gives you 54mb wireless, & as you said you can live with 54 on two of your machines.
The advantage of having 824 can be having builtin print server, so you can put a printer on the network without attaching it to a PC, simply assign an IP to printer & use it. The one I have used gave me excellent reception in the basement though router was placed on first floor.
hmmmmmmm… talked to a source of local chain here.. he said wait for 3 weeks (which is gonna be PRECISE time for final time for buying) because at that time 2 more 108 devices are gonna kick in.. dlink or linksys he wasnt sure..
so lets see.. so far dlink xtreme g air plus system is taking my points..
