Either u r in tube, or train or bus or at station…u’ll find almost everyone reading something…why???
Why it is so common in European/UK society unlike to any Muslim or Pakistani society?
Anyone could threw lil more light…

I think while travelling or anywhere like in a waiting area - alot of people read as a means to be left alone - not talk - it's like they dont want to be disturbed...
when you see someone sitting and reading - you don tend to approch them and start a conversation...
Hmmm…well I read while travelling, only on same routes though- cuz I know when I’ll see a red house and when I’ll see collage buildings, trees etc. Looking at the same isn’t fun so I read, plus as no one knows you, no one will disturb you, so you can read your favorite stuff without any disturbance. I never read business oriented stuff or do homework in train though, that’s too boring.
Why we don’t do that in Pak, well dunno about other countries, but in Pak. I personally wouldn’t do that as too much happens around you all the time, and I can’t afford to miss any of it. Also, in public trans. with all that jhatkas and dakhas, you can’t really concentrate. That’s my guess anyway. Deeper reasons Hmmm…do we teach our kids, or were we taught or encouraged to free reading? I wasn’t, or during normal school days at least. All that non-school related stuff had to wait till summer vacation or other free times

Perhaps some others follow same rules as my parents used to, they’ve changed their minds now

so perhaps free-reading is considered bad, if it takes the time you are supposed to spend doing your home work, so our ppl don’t develop same kinda ‘love’ for books as Europeans.
Mem! that could possibly be a reason to left alone...
Sabha! Don't u think it is all related to our culture in Pak or literacy????
The literacy rate in Pak is only 33% (that includes reading & writing ur name is Urdu)

I think that literature is very much stressed upon in the UK..with the great writers such as DH Lawrence, Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre, their works just cant go unnoticed, they have to be read.
Personally, I love reading.

cuz there is enough light and less crowd in british trains compared to pakistani trains.
i am sure pakistanis would definitely read at least railway timetable so that they know how late train is running, if given a chance.
I persoanlly used to read a lot while in a bus to & from school evntho everybody used to warm me that it’s not good for your eyes to read while you’r in motion. Geuss what? It’s true. Now I feel totally sick whenevr I try to read while commuting & my eyesight isnt t/ same

. That’s one reason we don’t see ppl reading in buses etc.
Also, there are other factors involved specially when one considers a developing nation as ours. Literacy rate being one of them, t/ other main reason is that books dont come cheap for an average middle class family in Pakistan. T/ concept of library is limited to " British Council" Which not everyone can afford. I remeMbr I used to buy a book evry month @ least & they didn’t come cheap (It was considered a luxury to buy 2 books in a month!).
I was lucky that my school had a great library w/ extensive collection of books from classics to modern day reading, but that’s not a common occurence in Pakistan, cuz not everybody unfortunately can afford that.
