British couple gets married for the 66th time in Karachi, Pakistan - New Tang Dynasty Television (NTD TV)

British couple Alex Pelling and Lisa Gant had their 66th wedding ceremony in Karachi, Pakistan, the latest stop in their quest for the perfect wedding venue.

In 2011 Alex and Lisa decided to stop their routine jobs and concentrate their lifestyle on having weddings all over the globe and in different societies. They write about them in their blog ‘2people1life’.

Their first ceremony was in their hometown of Didsbury, England and they’ve since tried out places as varied as Las Vegas, Transylvania and Morocco. They say at the end of the journey they’ll pick their favourite place and go back there to officially tie the knot.

For their wedding in Karachi, a house was decorated with roses and marigolds, and arrangements were made for traditional musicians to play music.

Just like a traditional bride in Pakistan, Lisa arrived at the venue after spending nearly five hours at a beauty salon. Alex arrived with male guests dancing and cheering around him.

Pelling says it was one of the most memorable ceremonies to date.

“It’s really incredible. We could never have imagined, you know, this happening. It’s so unique even after 65 other weddings, this is so unique in every way, really. We just feel lucky and blessed to have been made so welcome and have such a fantastic experience,” he said in an interview with local Pakistani channel Samaa TV.

They’ve been travelling by camper van, and Gant said she was glad they decided to include Pakistan in their route.

“Well we’re on a route, we drive. We’re driving around the world so we came to Pakistan from Iran and next we will go to India and everywhere else. But we are so glad that we came here first. We really really enjoyed this day, It’s just been perfect,” she said.

She added they haven’t run into any trouble in Pakistan.

“None at all. It’s really surprised me, and it’s stunning. Everyone’s outfits are beautiful and it’s just incredible. The flowers, the smells, the music, everything is perfect,” Gant said.

The ceremony was organised by local events company iPlan Events.

One of the organisers said they wanted to put on an event that would show the positive side of Pakistan.

“We only want to uphold Pakistan’s image, because terrorism and other things have defamed the country. We just wanted, for the foreign couple coming here, to create an environment to make them wonder what goes on here in Pakistan, Karachi. So we gave them the best so that they will tell other people we have taken them to good places to eat, taken them around the city and offered them a great feast. So we tried to give them the best reception,” said the unidentified organiser.

Their plans to travel to India and beyond may have hit a bump in the road.

According to a post on Tuesday (June 10) on their Facebook page, after 120,000 km (75,000 miles), three years, 50-odd countries and 66 weddings, their van, nicknamed “Peggy” broke down in Pakistan and cannot be repaired.

Now they’re wondering if they quit or carry on.
