British County cricketers, Pakistan Veterans XI to meet in Nov. 9 ODI

MIRPUR (AJK), Nov 7 (APP): The teams for the scheduled first-ever November 9 one-day international benefit cricket match to be played between British Pakistanis County Cricket lads and Pakistan Veterans XI at Quaid-i-Azam International Sports Stadium in Mirpur, were announced here Monday.

AJK President Raja Zulqurnani Khan will open the match also to be witnessed by the AJK Prime Minister Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan being the chief guest at the concluding ceremony.

The arrangements are being given final touches to hold the ODI between British Pakistanis County Cricket players and Pakistan Veterans XI at Quaid-i-Azam International Sports Stadium in Mirpur on November 9 in a befitting manner to help October 8 last year’s earthquake-victims, Mirpur Deputy Commissioner Fiyaz Ali Abbasi told APP here late Monday.

Pakistan Veterans XI, comprising the world-fame national stars, include **Waseem Akram, Javaid Miandad, Mudassar Nazar, Javaid Hayat, Mohsin Kamal, Aqib Javaid, Mushtaq Ahmed, Abdul Qadir, Ashraf Ali, Akram Raza, Manzoor Elahi, Ali Zia, Shahid Anwar, Zahoor Elahi and Nadeem Abbasi. **

Whereas the British Pakistanis County Cricket team is consisted of Right Hand bats Tahir **Naqqash and Kadeer Ali, (from Birmingham, Warwickshire) Bilal Shafayat (Nottinghamshire), Left-hand bats Moeen Ali and Omer Ali (Birmingham Herefordshire) and others. **

The match will go live on air by PTV World, the D.C said and added it could be watched by the cricketlovers in Britain as well.

The match, it may be added, is being played under the auspices of Mirpur Development Authority. An organizing committee headed by Chairman Mirpur Development Authority Sardar Muhammad Rahim Khan and comprising senior officials of the divisional and district administration of Mirpur division and the notables of the area has already been formed to supervise the arrangements for holding of the match in a befitting manner and to coordinate the prospective sponsors of the day-long international contest.

Meanwhile a meeting, chaired by Mirpur Deputy Commissioner Fiyaz Abbasi here Monday reviewed the arrangements for holding of the match in a most enthusiastic and proper manner to ensure the maximum earning for the quake-victims besides to provide an interesting sport event to the cricket lovers.

The meeting, attended by heads of various nation building departments and the sport lovers decided to utilize all of potentials to convert the match into a cultural festival.

The DC informed the meeting that the income of the benefit match will be contributed in the President of Pakistan’s Relief fund for rehabilitation of earthquake victims. Various national legends of pop music who will perform of their talent at a day before the contest (November 8) in the musical function being held to raise the funds for the benefit of the quake-survivors.

The meeting reviewed the arrangements for holding of the match by taking various decision to this direction. The meeting decided to give free access to the local students upto the Matric level to witness the match through their respective school managements. This decision is aimed at to open vistas for the national and international-level cricket matches besides to promote the international cricket and other sport activities in the area.

The meeting also decided to form various sub committees to jointly coordinate and manage the arrangements for holding of the match in a grand manner, These committees will establish an affective liaison with the prospective sponsors to ensure their maximum and required participation to ensure the complete successful holding of the contest.

The meeting was informed that shirts and bats of national cricket stars Imran Khan, Waseem Akram, Inzamam ul Haq, and Shahid Afridi was well as the bats bearing the autographs of the world-fame Pakistani cricketers will be auctioned at the Quaid-i-Azam Sports Stadium during the match. Besides, renowned national pop singers will perform during break on this occasion.

Various prominent personalities from different parts of Britain, Pakistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir including the cricket fans, social and political workers will witness the match.

It may be added that it would be the first international sport event being played on the soil of Azad Jammu Kashmir first ever in the history of the liberated territory.

**British Kashmiri XI wins by 52 runs in Mirpur **

MIRPUR, Azad Jammu & Kashmir: The visiting British Kashmiri County Cricketers

XI beat Pakistan Veterans XI by 52 runs in a limited overs benefit cricket match, here at the Quaid-e-Azam International Sports Stadium on Thursday.

Income from the benefit match will be contributed to the President of Pakistan’s Relief Fund for rehabilitation of the earthquake victims.

AJK Prime Minister Sardar Attque Ahmed Khan, Secretary Information Government of Pakistan Shahid Rafi and visiting Kashmir-born Lord Mayor of Bradford Aurangzeb Chaudhry also witnessed the match, which was also watched by a crowd of over 8,000 spectators in the 16,000-capacity stadium.

British Kashmiri County Cricketers XI won the toss and elected to bat first. They made 174 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the stipulated 25 overs. The Pakistan Veterans XI were all out after scoring 122 runs.

Skipper Moeen Ali of the winners was the top scorer with 61 runs from 35 balls.

He was declared Man of the Match. Javed Hayat and Abdul Qadir of Pakistan Veterans XI got three wickets each, Mushtaq Ahmed took two and Manzoor Elahi and Akram Raza agged one wicket each.

Javed Hayat top-scored with 26 not out for the home side. Visiting bowlers Mir Usman, Irfan Rafiq and M Fayyaz took three wickets each.

Shahid Rafi and Sardar Mohammad Rahim, chairman MDA, the main organisers of the match, distributed medals among the triumphant British Kashmiri Cricketers XI and Pakistan Veterans XI besides distributing souvenirs.

Sometime ago you posted pics of the stadium. It was very nice and modern, I wonder why no international game has been scheduled for this stadium.

I think they would like to hold international matches played here.

However, couple of reasons why this may not have happened so far is due to the fact that international standard hotel accomodation not currently available in the city.

Also, the other reason may be due to the fact the Pak gov't position is that all of Kashmir is disputed territory so Pakistan playing home matches in Azad Kashmir somehow legitimises the LOC.

I personally think it's a matter of time before international matches are played here and with it facilities such as hotels will also become available.

MIRPUR, Azad Kashmir: The people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will witness another one-day cricket match to be played at the Quaid-e-Azam International Sports Stadium here in February next year.

This was disclosed by Chairman Mirpur Development Authority (MDA) Sardar Mohammad Rahim Khan while addressing a news conference here on Friday.

Rahim said the management has decided to open the world-class stadium for the regular One-day Internationals (ODIs) as well as Tests to provide quality cricket to the fans.

Deputy Commissioner and Patron-in-Chief District Cricket Association Fayyaz Ali Abbasi, Acting President AJK Cricket Association Nawaz Rattayal, DCA President Ashraf Butt, Director Estate Management MDA Raja Fazal-ur-Rehman, Secretary Rashed Hanif, SDM Mohammad Tayyab and other officials of the DCA and the cricket management committee were also present at this occasion.

Rahim added that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been moved with the recommendation to accord the Test centre status to Mirpur due to the existence of the world-class Quaid-e-Azam Stadium.

He said this will promote the sport activities especially cricket besides the international tourism in this picturesque town located in the periphery of the scenic Mangla lake.

The MDA chief revealed that a coaching camp under talent-hunt programme is being held by National Cricket Academy (NCA) at the Quaid-e-Azam Stadium from November 20 and it will continue till November 30 for picking the required talent.

He said that prior to this, the trials to look for the talent would commence from November 18. Local lads of the 12-22 age group would be eligible to participate in the trials which will be supervised by former Test cricketer Mudassar Nazar.
