Britains "Ivy League"?

I know we have the Russel Group, but thats far too big, with nearly 20 memebrs, or 1 in 5 UK universities.

What would make a smaller group, a top 10 by academic reputation and peer review, of UK universities?

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

Oxford
Cambridge
University College London
Imperial
Kings
Edinburgh
Manchester :)
Liverpool:)
Newcastle
Nottingham
^^ This is just based on what i have heard about these places!

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

decent list but then some specialised collges are not on that ist

London school of economics
London Business school

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

^^yeah heard loads about LSE, but I think that overall somewhere like Nottingham ought to be considered a superior institute, simply due to the range of subjects on offer! As u said, LSE and the like are a bit too specialized

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

LSE is one of the crown jewels in UK higher education. Specialized or not, it surely makes a top 10.

I figure:

Oxford
Cambridge
UCL
Kings
LSE
Imperial

are all shoe ins, with 4 places in the top 10 up for grabs/debate.

Warwick, Bristol, Notts, Durham, Manchester and Edinburgh would for my money be fighting to fill the last places.

I think thats all the "very highly regarded" schools?

Re: Britains “Ivy League”?

Warwick…naah!
Bristol…no way!
Durham…as if!
Notts…possibly!
Manchester- yep yep yep
Edinburgh- spot on…

…but ya missed out Liverpool!:snooty:

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

Cambridge
Oxford
UCL
Kings
LSE
Imperial
UMIST
ASTON
Edinburgh

It depends on which courses you enquire about specifcally.

Liverpool is ok.

Sheffield is good for some.

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

UMIST and Manchester combined a few yrs ago- to form a "super university" and Aston.....hmmmm....only thing I hear it's ok for is pharmacy-but even then there are many better than it!....Liverpool is definitley up and coming....and Sheffield is ok-but let down by the city-cos its a horrible place!

Re: Britains “Ivy League”?

Yaar 1) Liverpool is widely regarded as an average institution from all my readings, it doesnt seem to be too well regarded, just an average institution like Reading, City, Brunel ect.

Bristol is pretty highly regarded. Least from what I’ve read (Guardian).

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

The Guardian 2005 guide lists Liverpool at #45!

Thats why I wanted a list based on academic rep and peer review. The papers change there formulae daily, and get differing results.

For the record, Guardian says:

  1. Oxford
  2. Cambridge
  3. Imperial College
  4. Schl of Oriental & African Studies
  5. London Schl of Economics
  6. King's Col, London
  7. University College London
  8. York
  9. Warwick
  10. Edinburgh

Only SOAS I was surprised at. Its good and all, but ppl usually dont mention it amongst the Giants colleges of London University.

Re: Britains “Ivy League”?

Its excellent for the following:
BioSciences
Medicine
Vetrinary Science
Engineering
Latin American Studies
Dentistry
Physiology

and for the rest of the popular courses it also does well!

:naraz: :naraz: :naraz:

Plus it’s seriously advancing in Business and Languages…it’s all about investment really- and I bet that over the next few years Liverpool will be up there with the others! Cos there is a lot of money being ploughed in right now!

You can’t go off the Guardian/Times lists- cos these ppl r just biased! half of the editors probably graduated from Oxbridge anwyays!

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

I just graduated from Med at Liverpool- When I had applied in 2001, it was like joint second for Medicine, beating Oxford and the London Schools....Alot of these lists go off the prestige and name of a Uni!.....I personally have friends who studied at Oxford-doing Medicine!...and from what they said, my course at Liverpool was 10 times better!

Re: Britains “Ivy League”?

Yaar whilst its admirable for you to champion Liverpool so heavily, I think the tables are not biased. They do conduct there research.

I have found the 2006 tables, recently published. Liverpool is 47th (out of 122). 1 change in the top ten for this year. Bath in, York out.

Re: Britains “Ivy League”?

Aston?

It’s rep does not correlate with its good rankings. Its rare in that case.

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

this - for 2007 according to Times Online:

Rank University

1 University of Oxford
2 University of Cambridge
3 Imperial College London

4 London School of Economics

5 University College London
6 Loughborough University
7 University of Bristol

8 University of Warwick
9 University of Bath
10 University of Durham

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

Times 2007, do you have a link?

Thanks

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

Apples and oranges people schools shouldb be compared with schools..in certain subject areas for example peace studies Bradford Uni is highly regarded for example..in medicine, Leeds Nuffield, Liverpool are well respected..in business studies Man Uni is up there with the best..

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

Aston is good for science related degrees, such as Optometry.

Yep UMIST Manchester combined, spot on.

Liverpool is up and COMING. Its relatively easy entrance, but for aeronautical its becming difficult.

Right again...Sheffield area is bad, just like Bradford.

Warwick is a good Uni as in ratings, and Loughborough obviously for business.

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

YEP!
The Times also publishes subejct-specific tables...and u will often find that for example, Liverpool is in the top 10 for Medicine, yet for Law it could be like 24rd out of 40...
An important thing to remember is that when one applies to Uni, they go for a specific subject area...so it is imperative to make sure that the Uni is good in your chosen subject area...and as such these tables hold no real value, since they r misleading.

...and one more point....Uni's are research institutes, and because of this, they attract alot of investment....

Now if I was an investor and I had the choice of investing my money in Oxford and Leeds Met for example, I would pick Oxford, simply cos of it's name....This in turn means that they will have more funding to conduct research, and as a result they attract further investment and stay at the top of Uni rankings...

(we have to remember that rankings aren't just based on the success of a degree, but things like how much resharch is conducted....staff:student ratio etc.)

Re: Britains "Ivy League"?

kazi,
Agreed :D
