'Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!'

was put down by Putin’s chief spokesman Dmitry Peskov

PD recently said in PA that the rest of the world won’t miss much if Pakistan suddenly disappeared from the planet one day… But if this is what the Russians think about a country (albeit a small island) that has given so much to the world and is behind so many modern inventions including telephone (Graham Bell) and both passenger railway (George Stephenson) and steam engine (Richard Trevithick), just think…

The 50 greatest British inventions

However a very unfair comment as not only the above great inventions but also every major sport that is played today including Soccer, Cricket, Rugby, Hockey, Badminton, Baseball, Golf and Tennis was invented by the British

Small island? We abolished slavery, beat the Nazis and invented everything worthwhile, says David Cameron after Russia’s jibe

lagta hai kissi k dil pe bohat zore ki lagi

David Cameron today roared back at Russia’s jibe that he leads “a small island that no one pays any attention to”.

In an impassioned outburst at the end of a G20 summit dominated by acrimony over Syria, the Prime Minister boasted that Britons had “invented most of the things worth inventing” and listed centuries of British achievement, creativity and influence, including the abolition of slavery and the defeat of the Nazis.
“Let me be clear — Britain may be a small island, but I would challenge anyone to find a country with a prouder history, a bigger heart or greater resilience,” he declared.

His remarks came after hopes of a deal on Syria were dashed at a dinner last night where leaders were bitterly divided on how to respond to Bashar al-Assad’s suspected use of Sarin nerve gas in an attack that killed hundreds of people.
In key developments:
US President Barack Obama won little support for military strikes at the G20 talks and a vote in Congress next week appears to be on a knife-edge.
Mr Cameron argued the case for America to go it alone, warning against a “dangerous doctrine” that only the United Nations Security Council should be allowed to sanction military action. He pointed out that Russia and China could simply veto any action.
Russia sent a landing craft to join other warships in the Mediterranean near Syria.
US intelligence revealed it had intercepted orders from an Iranian to militants in Iraq, telling them to bomb US targets if Syria is attacked.
Mr Cameron hit back after a Kremlin official reportedly told Russian reporters at the G20 in St Petersburg that the UK was “just a small island: no one pays any attention to them”.
Warming to his rebuttal, the Prime Minister said: “Britain is an island that has helped to clear the European continent of fascism and was resolute in doing that throughout the Second World War.
“Britain is an island that helped to abolish slavery, that has invented most of the things worth inventing, including every sport currently played around the world, that still today is responsible for art, literature and music that delights the entire world.
“We are very proud of everything we do as a small island — a small island that has the sixth-largest economy, the fourth best-funded military, some of the most effective diplomats, the proudest history, one of the best records for art and literature and contribution to philosophy and world civilisation.”
Mr Cameron’s reference to his “small island” stood against Russia’s boast that it is the biggest country in the world by land mass. Mr Putin’s chief spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied that he had made the “small island” comment, saying it did not reflect Russia’s views on its “positive” relations with the UK.
Downing Street last night demanded clarification from Mr Putin’s office after the remark was reported. Mr Cameron told journalists: “I’ve been told that the Russians absolutely deny making the remark, and certainly no one’s made it to me.”
The tensions were highlighted by one Tory MP — Henry Smith, who represents Crawley — tweeting: “Putin really is a tosser.”
He later added: “Great Britain might be a small island but we are a great country that has a bigger economy and a far better human rights record than Russia.”
British sources say the leaders of France, Turkey, Canada and the UK all gave strong backing to Mr Obama’s call for military action at a dinner last night. George Osborne said the Turks put a “very strong argument about how the world must respond to the use of chemical weapons”.
However, they were seen to be in a minority, with other European leaders including Germany’s Angela Merkel urging a delay.
Mr Cameron was candid that “divisions are too great” for the G20 to agree action against Assad. He praised Mr Obama’s stand, saying the US leader “is in no way seen as a war-monger”. He added that Mr Putin’s claim that Syrian rebels might have launched the Sarin attack was “miles away from what I think the truth is”.
Russian press spokesman Mr Peskov said the G20 was split down the middle, with some countries seeking “hasty” action and others wanting the US to go through the UN Security Council.
Arguing for America to go it alone, Mr Cameron said Russia and China’s record of blocking UN action raised a question mark over whether the Security Council could be relied on take action.
Responding to other leaders who thought attacks could only be legal after a UNSC resolution, he said: “I don’t think that is the case. I think it is a very dangerous doctrine.
“One of the frustrations of last night is you have countries including security council permanent members saying this must all be decided by the UN Security Council yet they are the very countries that are blocking any action.”
Meanwhile, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev told the BBC that Obama and Putin should meet in order to find a solution to the Syrian conflict. He said: “They must strike up a conversation that will lead to the improvement of relations and stop the things which are happening now.”
Some 100,000 people have died in the conflict, according to the UN.

Most of the people on Yahoo UK agree with Putin! And they blame both TB and DC for influx of immigration into this country!

Another comment:

a small country indeed with a huge immigration problem due to Cameron breaking another promise to cut the numbers down. for you tory diehards immigration as nearly doubled under dodgy dave and yet he is still giving hard earned taxpayers money away to foreign countries including Syria. maybe the Russians are right we have turned into a small island run by dodgy dave and is none-caring cronies

Re: 'Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!'

Umm wasn't baseball invented by the American even if a lot of them came from Briton? I guess tennis should stay because of female tennis players! :D

Re: 'Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!'

While Britain has made lot of technological discoveries they were done by individuals rather than the government Cameron exaggerates on it. The UK has also been quite generous with immigration letting us desis in from all over including the many Indians and Pakistanis who fled due to discrimination in Uganda. UK has definitely done much good for people. At the same time it has had a negative impact in shipping its people to other countries, making slaves of many Indigenous people-causing many to die and also the legacy of colonialism is hardly one to be proud of. The Kohinoor still with the British queen was meant to signify the end of an empire.whoever has it leads to ruin and unfortunately highlights the UK's now diminished position. The sun no longer sets on the British empire and Cameron would do well to remember that :) Has Cameron and British government ever apologised for colonialism and looting of gold and resources from Asian continent and elsewhere? No, instead they continue their looting elsewhere in the world.

Russian is limited to Russia only! English is probably the only global language at the moment!

Re: 'Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!'

Putin is an idiot/

Britain is 10x the country Russia is in every single way that can be seen positively.

Re: 'Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!'

They might not have invented it but they propagated it and made it popular. They often even shipped slaves to foreign countries. The reason India and Pakistan populace is so poor is because UK looted so much in 300 years. Before that when you read of accounts of English settlers they talk of how much wealth they saw. Before their foreign invasions England was in state of poverty and colonialism allowed them to go from rags to riches. I mention this to white people who talk about how much poverty there is on the subcontinent, so many slums and all that. The estimate is trillions of dollars not including gems and diamonds. The GDP of the India/Pakistan subcontinent according to historians was around 32% and after the British left it was 3%. No wonder inventions can't occur on empty stomach. Will they ever return the resources they stole? Probably not.
Unfortunately now both countries populations will be looted by politicians and governments. The people in UK talk about there being over-immigration. Well that wouldn't exist if they didn't colonialise all those places and take so much away. The natives of America and Australia did not ask to be colonialised and looted either. They're not asking the English to go back home. It's because they now all belong to the land. But now most peple know of colonialism and lot of british people today seem to be ashamed of this past which they should be.
What did the UK contribute for worldwide benefit? The railways, technology etc was to help their colony survive to help take goods for their own benefit. It wasn't altruistic. Individual organisations exist which were altruistic but the British government, like others worldwide, does things only for its own benefit which i guess it should. HOwever, i disagree with Putin because def Uk is a better place and more equitable than Russia is. Over-exaggeration is not good tho.

Russia can be proud of its dictatorial past and supporting dictators and murderers (Assad) in this world. great achievements by Russians.

Re: ‘Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!’

Not sure if russians said that but if they did, you can only feel sorry for damn russians…

REMEMBER SIZE DOES NOT MATTER…what really matters is how long your ship sails before going down!

almost whole western civilization of last 1000 years owes to UK..from history to culture to science to education to colonialism to military might…so if UK disappears from planet somehow, it would be a disaster

russians are frustrated becuase they are worth nothing today.they know that they can do nothing when USA will kick asad ass..

Re: 'Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!'

The Russian official's comment is very true though as regards Britain's legendary tendency to just blindly tow the US line. This is the first time that their MPs have shown some spine and have said no to war. Cameron was just itching to go to war but was timely checked by The Commons, the lower House of Parliament in the UK.

Bashar Assad needs to be punished for his crimes and must go but then I also know that the US response (as always) would be disproportionate to the original atrocity and cause an even bigger humanitarian crisis like in Afghanistan and Iraq. Plus do remember that the rebels are no saints either, there are many criminal elements (barbarians who eat organs of dead people) and extremists among them. So both need to be held to account by the international community

I think this was a hilarious comment. Putin was brilliant. Shame we couldn't think of anything as funny to say in return.

Indeed. Modern baseball was invented by an American bank clerk, Alexander Cartwright Jr.

Re: ‘Britain a small island that no one pays any attention to!’

correct Britian did cause most of the political problems in the world due to their Imperialist history and their recent foreign policies.

Prime example they continued to sell Syria chemical weapons only 11 months ago!

The history of britian is not something to be proud of most of it is a disgrace.
