bringing children home during school lunch break

my son will be going to school full time in fall, I cant decide if I should bring him home during lunch break. I have been talking to parents and getting mixed reviews for both scenarios. currently I am a stay home mom.

Please share your experiences/tips/point of views.

Thanks.

bringing children home during school lunch break

Where do you live? Here in the US, lunch break at school is 30-35 minutes…not long enough to bring your kid home, feed them and get them back to school…unless you live like literally at the doorstep…I honestly have never known anyone who brought their child home for lunch, I don’t think it’s a common practice here but I could be wrong :hmmm:

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

I don’t know where you live but children in most schools in US schools barely get 30 minutes of lunch time. I don’t think it is enough time for you to take ur child home, feed him, and bring him back to school. Also lunch and recess time is vital for their social growth, learning table manners, physical activity, learning to be independent, etc. I wouldn’t recommend you taking that time from your child. If you don’t like school lunches, send lunch with him.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

Why would you bring your kid home? It makes no sense to me.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

I used to come home at lunch. But we were close enough to walk home in 5 minutes.
And lunches were an hour and 15 minutes then.

I think either way would work - whatever the kid gets into the habit of doing.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

Back in the olden days, when I was a child I used to come home for lunch every single day and I LOVED it! Garam, garam khana and the noon hour cartoons - those were the days!

Mind you, that was because our school timings were different than I believe the US system - school started at about 8:55am and went to 3:30pm and we had an hour for lunch so that was plenty of time to walk home and back to school (I lived between 5 and 10 minutes from school for junior and then middle school).

I feel so deprived…I don’t remember ever having an hour long lunch break in school.. :crying:

In high school we had off campus lunch allowed for juniors and seniors but that was still only 35 minutes…only enough time to run to Taco Bell and back

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

In France its common practice to go home and have lunch I think. But their lunch break is also like 2 hours or something

any frenchie around to verify?

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

I think it is 1 hour and 10-15 minutes. More than half of the parents I spoke to either wish to or bring children home for lunch esp in primary school. Some parents said no they dont want to bring kids home for lunch because they need to interact with other kids during that time and toughen up.

During primary school years they have very impressionable minds, so isnt it better to bring them home for lunch. I never came home for lunch I wish I did.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

yes in france it is 2 hrs, one of my best friend is french and she used to come home with her mom for lunch, and when she moved to country side she said it became even more luxurious.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

I am thinking if I can register him for a program like music or chess during lunch break then those days he can stay in school..

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

It is up to you, what you want for your child. I would prefer my child having lunch with other children.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

I want two hour lunches and home cooked food at lunch and cartoons and naps. My life sucked :frowning: at least my lunch life

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

i used to run home, eat lunch, run back. all in under 30 mins. :snooty:

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

My kid is starting school FT this coming fall as well and I have three reasons why I am not brining her back home for lunch even though I am a SAHM as well.

a) It’s true the more she ineracts with other kids sooner she will adjust in her class/environment. I want her to be as independent as she can be i.e eating her lunch with her peers, and yes they do learn if given the opportunity. I am hoping she will be fine iA

b) I have two other small children at home…a newborn and a 3 year old and I don’t want to be in-out of the house for morning drop-off, then lunch time pick-up and finally at chutti time pick-up. I might as well camp outside of the school :cb:

c) I want to make sure I have ample time to prepare a kick-a** meal when she gets back home after school

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

^ true, for working mothers and the ones in your situation, I do agree it does make more sense. hmmmm I am still not sure…may be I will try bringing him during lunch break, and for pick up and drop off use the school bus.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

Yeah…I agree with PP…back in the day lunch breaks were at least an hour long. I remember when I lived in Canada I used to walk home for lunch every day. Fresh lunch and cartoons lol best time

If your son has a longer lunch break, otherwise, it’s not really a big deal.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

Got to love Europe.

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

School here is from 8-2:30… with a 45 minute lunch break. It’s really unheard of for kids to go home for lunch… although some mothers will sometimes come by and surprise their kids with food from outside or a hot lunch from home.

I never went home for lunch! My mother packed our lunches and on special days she would buy us a bagel with butter to bring to school with chips and juice as a snack! Lol

Re: bringing children home during school lunch break

What about play time? Hour and half for lunch and play time is just enough time for kids. Why take away that special time from their schedule.
