Bridge Collapses

Re: Bridge Collapses

Can you rewrite that so it makes some sense?

Re: Bridge Collapses

I am a male. And no, every bridge is not the same. Even the world's best constructed bridges will collapse if made to handle overweight trucks. Clearly, something was wrong with this bridge since it was so new, but in every developed country trucks that are over the weight limit are stopped and fined by police. Not in Pakistan.

Re: Bridge Collapses

Saleem bahi was right on Target . According to details published in a local newspaper this morning , the tender was issued to NLC under the table .I hope you all know the connection btw NLC and National Highway Authority. Related ministry has accused Ex-chairman ( NHA) Major general Farrukh Javed for being one of the guilty parties in this scenario . Ministry stated to be forced by big names at president camp for allocating this project to NHC .

Further insult to injury , the project was supposed to get finish by 2005 , where it was completed two years late then scheduled and only lasted for 25 days .

Welcome to My Pakistan ! :snooty:

Re: Bridge Collapses

well they do get finned in pakistan also , if they dont belong to some high ranked police officer But the money or bribe in such cases goes in their own pockets !

Re: Bridge Collapses

Volume of traffic , that’s a nice one , on my last visit in 2005 , twice I went driving to city centre and ended up parking up there as I wasn’t able to bring it back driving due to the enormous traffic volume .

And it is a crying shame for someone like me, who has lived a fairly large chunk of his life up there.

I say , if City government doesn’t start working on Mass transit project now , traffic will become a monster, no one can control .

Re: Bridge Collapses

I believe the NLC were the contractors behind it?

Re: Bridge Collapses

yes indeed and the project was awarded to them behind close doors . The tender was issued to them without getting quotes from other companies interested in this project .

Re: Bridge Collapses

This can’t be true, major general can’t be part of guilty party… he was appointed by army to root out corruption, he can’t be part of guilty party :naraz:

Re: Bridge Collapses

60 MILLION DOLLARS. Thats what this cost - 3.5 billion rupees.

Ironically enough, when Musharraf inaugurated this highway he used it as an oppurtunity to bad mouth Sharif. This new overpass in Karachi was a marvel of his leadership. It was tendered fairly. It only took a year to build. It was the cheapest roadway built. Yeah yeah. Look at it now. This is just humiliating.

The americans were shocked a 50 year old bridge fell apart. Pakistanis are shocked a 2 month old bridge fell apart.

Re: Bridge Collapses

I don't think there is any reason to blame Musharraf personally.
You gotta see where the problem lies when a tragedy like this occurs. It was NHA and NLC responsible.

Re: Bridge Collapses

I hope there is some serious thrashing for once. This is an outcome of the worst form of negligence and corruption, in awarding contracts to wrong suppliers out of contacts, bribery, hiring the wrong ppl for the same reasons, using low quality equipment, getting money for more equipment, pocketing some and using less and less quality material...It happens all the time in Pakistan in not just public but even pvt projects...:(

God bless the deceased and their families...

Re: Bridge Collapses

Not quite... Gen. zia provided stable and clean governance- under general zia all constructions were monitored and he would have ordered strict Islamic punishment for building contractors and others who used cheap construction material. Anyway, very sad incident indeed- govt. should enquiry into this and trace the root cause of this- there might be other structures under danger too. Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi raji'un

Re: Bridge Collapses

Hain?? the bridge is only 2 months old???? what a shame... I didn't know 2 months bridge can collapse- it might be a world record.. assi Pakistan nahin gaye do saal ton.

Re: Bridge Collapses

koi gal naheen, tusi sariyaan khabraan tay parh lainday ho na. You aren't missing much :p
the bridge was inaugrated almost 20-24 days back.

Re: Bridge Collapses

But he "couldn't" because he was too busy importing all the AK47s and with bomb explosions all over the country :p

Re: Bridge Collapses

yara Skipper , dont play with moin's dillli jazbaat , he has for yr man Zia :)

Re: Bridge Collapses

Aisi koi baat nahin, zia did what was best for the mulk. Zia made Pakistan prominent in the eyes of Arab nations- many of who control a lot of world policies- the reasom the Kashmir dispute got so much footage in zia's time was because of his efforts- plus he provided a system where there was no room for corruption. Most of the Shia-Sunni riots, bomb explosions happened after he died. The only major bomb explosion that came to news was his last flight in Bahawalpur.

Re: Bridge Collapses

Have you forgotten ojhri camp for which he was directly responsible. Also the 1984 or there about bomb blast in Karachi. Get over him, he was a corrupt third rate general, incompetent to the core, he did nothing good for Pakistan.

Re: Bridge Collapses

Ojhri camp was a very sad incident.. my relatives in Pindi and Islamabad thought the it was a war and ppl had started taking refuge in buildings etc. I guess 100 or more died. But I beg to differ gen. zia was directly responsible- he was aiding Afghan mujaheedins and the weapons were meant for that purpose- I guess it was an accidental fire that triggered the whole thing. Are you aware that many believe Junejo masterminded it to show zia in poor light? Gen. zia represented Pakistaniyat more than Punjabiyat and thats why I like him. He didn't care about his own life and in the event war broke out, he could have gone to fight as an infantry soldier despite his age- I dont think Atheist Ayub khan or hyper bhutto would have done that.
