Re: Bridge Collapses
If bridge was so sensitive to weight and load then there must've been enforcement to stop such trucks from getting on that bridge, BTW there are many many bridges in Karachi and overloaded trucks/buses pass over them every day I haven't heard of such a collapse...
not yet...but i agree something was obviously wrong with this bridge, but given enough time every bridge will collapse if it has to deal with overweight vehicles.
Re: Bridge Collapses
Resignation Minerva ?u must be taking mickey out of me here , I hope , you remember the statement issued by one of our Railways ministers , when asked to resign over a horrible rail accident , stupidly replied ‘ why would I resign , was I driving that rail ? ’.
Bibi , who has ever willing resigned in Pakistan ? did some one out of shame in 1971 ?
All we do, make a committee to figure out the culprits and write a report and then make another committee to check their findings. That’s all we will seeing here .

Rightly said skipper , becharay laa.raaz tay hain , girrtay nahi hain ! :)
Re: Bridge Collapses
Hazraart, that was a wishful thinking and of course a jibe... sigh. I know, too well that no one's gonna ever resign here. (no sense of humor, sheesh)

aasan ho to gayee hayn, no body does any "street protest", no one sues authorities in courts for damages caused, all "losses, incompetencies" are understood and accepted.
Re: Bridge Collapses
And there was time , when ayub govt increased a rupee in price of sugar , people were out on streets protesting . My grand used to tell me that but thesedays it just sounds like a joke !
People die on our streets in accidents but we dont take them to hospital , we have become such a senseless nation .

i believe politicians win on very bogus votes, they win through heavey influence over people, they use terrorism to be winner, so, i think election is a not solution of pakistan, it should hand over to UNO for betterment, for peace, for implementation law and order, to provide justice to people of pakistan
Re: Bridge Collapses
dude u wrote a qaseeda in the shaan of SC, I gave you a reality check, SC needs to make sure lower level courts are empowered. all thru CJ saga when bacchay were jumping up and down about independence of judiciary i noted then that its not just independence but the end of corruption in courts that we also need to see.
the relevant authorities failed and need to be held accountable.
Excuse me, i just reiterated what Cowasjee wrote.
And SC needs to make sure that corrupt officials and kept in ckeck and they are beginning to do that and lets hope they continue to that unless they are stopped by establishment aur us din aap khushiyaaN manatey nazar aaiengey.
Re: Bridge Collapses
One other reason among the others: overweight and overloaded trucks and buses.
wow, you are a wiser who has broad mind like a Benazir. Bibi bridge is a bridge no matter what type vehicles are crossing over the bridge, matter is quality and honesty
Re: Bridge Collapses
who will find out guilty in the collapsing of bridge the should hang up till death
Re: Bridge Collapses
what do the mullahs have to say about this? bet some of them are claiming this is divine punishment for pakistan because of shooting up lal masjid.
in fact may be they caused it - if a dozen of these fat mullahs crossed the bridge at the same time

Pakistani people are not senseless but pakistani establishment like police , army and politicians has made them senseless, if you wounded person took to hospital firstly police arrest you, if you complain agains any crime police involve you in the crime, if point out about any murder or crime police arest you firstly so people feel great fear to submitt any complaint against anyone, you dont know in police stations complainer get cursed and criminal get respect, now tell me how people can protest against any cruel deed
Re: Bridge Collapses
NHA leadership should be hanged. First a part of the Coastal Highway gets washed away in the rains, and now a flyover collapses.
Re: Bridge Collapses
Striking images!
Can someone who has been to Karachi and Lahore recently tell more about the recent condition of major bridges + Volume of traffic + what kind of traffic they handle etc etc?

I don't know much about "condition" of major bridges but I have seen lots of traffic on NIPA bridge (Gulshan Iqbal, Karachi), University road bridge (Gulshan Iqbal Karachi) Sharae Faisal bridge connecting defense they were getting all the 'commute' traffic i.e. minibuses and some big buses not sure of 18-wheelers or those 10-wheel trucks which hold twice their allowed avolume weights. The one bridge that connects Gulshan Iqbal block 2 (moti mehel) to FB areas seems to be under repair very frequently as "rain+traffic" seems to create holes.
Re: Bridge Collapses
I am not surprised about the collapse, rather I feel surprised that many constructions keep standing. So many words said on the collapse of bridge, but unfortunately very little pointed out about the real cause of the collapse. What I believe the cause is: Nepotism, connections, Quota system, and corruption. All these four things are linked to each other one way or another and all of them are cause of most of Pakistani mishaps (including collapse of northern bypass bridge).
When a person gets into government job through quota system, connections, or due to nepotism (person getting job because the one appointing do not see merit but take decisions on basis of a person ethnicity, party or religious affiliations, etc), or due to bribing the officials (corruption), than it is obvious that the appointees are not best available in competency. These people (that get appointed) realise that merit is not a criteria of judgment, thus in return they also advocate quota system, entertain connections, nepotism, and corruption. [That is the reason when talking to them (many of those I know at high places), I found that these people do not consider anything wrong in quota system, or getting job (or favours) because of connections, nepotism or even in doing corruption].
Those hard working and competent that do not get jobs (or admissions) because they could not get in through quota, do not have any connections or so not belong to right ethnicity, or that they could not pay bribe, these people just give up and if opportunity arises they leave the country.
Result is that, we have incompetents in government jobs that do all sort of incompetent works or take bribe to approve lower standard work. Well, if they are engineers than their incompetence means inferior designs or approving inferior design. In most cases these officers take bribes and thus overlook inferior designs or even inferior materials used on projects by contractors.
Result of such system is obvious. Bridge (or any sort of constructions) collapses because of faulty designs or use of inferior materials, fire fighters that could not control fires, police that do all sort of crimes, judiciary that give judgment to highest bidder, custom and income tax officers that cause huge loss to treasury … and so on … etc.
Re: Bridge Collapses
why i am crying for long time that pakistani regime should hand over to the UNO if pakistan would persist in the control of pakistani regime it will be so horrible for humans
