Teaser trailer for Bride and Prejudice
02 March 2004

When writer/director Gurinder Chadha announced she was following her international hit Bend It Like Beckham with a musical Bollywood version of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice we were, how shall we put it, slightly concerned. It’s not every day a low-budget film becomes a sleeper hit in Hollywood after all and this seemed like an odd choice to cement that international success.

But we’re always happy to admit when we’re wrong (actually we’re not at all happy about it and you normally have to torture such an admission out of us) and our first glimpse of the teaser trailer for Bride and Prejudice looks like we’ll have to revise our opinion of Chadha’s choice of follow-up. Looking like a mad mixture of Baz Luhrmann meets Bollywood, Bride and Prejudice is now appearing very interesting indeed. It’s just a shame it’s only available in poxy Windows Media.

My favorite novel of all time meets Bollywood. I can’t wait :hula:

looks good :k:

I am absolutely disgusted that Aishwariya Rai is playing the role of Lizzy Bennet. Lizzy was not a typical beauty by any means. Her sister was. I think they should have gotten somebody more simple to play Lizzy ..... Aishwariya is too glamourous. I hope they dim down her beauty for this role. I have my reservations about the film. I don't know .... nothing beats the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice. I hope Bollywood doesn't ruin the story.

And what is Kareena Kapoor doing in this movie? She should be the one who elopes...Lydia...chichori type. I can't bear to see her as Jane.

Gurinder Chadha's movies in the past are almost exclusively about the miseries of an Indian girl and the prejudices of her family, arranged marriages etc. I'd be amazed if she manages to produce anything different this time round.

I thought Namrita Shirodkhar was playing Jane? I haven’t seen the preview yet. Either way, none of them suit the roles … except for the guy playing Mr. Darcy. He’s hot.

However, no one will ever beat Colin Firth. He is and will always remain the ultimate Mr. Darcy.

nay ^ the ultimate Englishman

but whose this guy playing his part anyhow?

Just saw the trailer. i dunno... i don't think any version will be able to surpass the BBC/A&E version. Is that some new pop music in the trailer - what was up with that ? Why do they have to make everything so 'westernized'. hmmm i don't think i will like this and it will make me feel disappointed IF they over-westernize the classical 19th century book. i think i'm happy in my own little 1800 version with Jennifer Eisle (sp?) and Colin Firth.

i know i should shut up because i haven't seen it yet, but i didn't like the trailer.

I agree, Nadia. It's gonna be tough to surpass the original novel or the A&E movie.

I also don't get the whole focus on "rhythm." Makes me think of the new Dirty Dancing movie. What does that have to do with P/Bride and Prejudice?

Yes exactly i am not certain myself. i guess, if you really are a die-hard fan of the A&E/BBC version, then you have to mentally prepare yourself that the new one is going to be radically different. If you do that and accept the new one on its own merits, then i think people will enjoy the movie.

i guess i am just too stubborn. i hate to see something originally good, being morphed into something supposely more hip and cool; you lose the essence of the novel's classical environment. It's just not something you could translate into a 21st century, supposedly trendier western-Bollywood theme. It's like that Romeo and Juliet movie that came out years ago with Leonardo diCaprio. But then that's me... i don't like change. i hope others really enjoy it though.

^Yes. I have mentally prepared myself for the more trivial fun of the Bollywood movie.

I actually think I'm partially drawn to Austen's literature because the pressures of domesticity and having the appropriate marriage and all that resonate with my Pakistani(-American) upbringing. Those issues translate really well. So I was really excited when I heard about this. I just hope they do a good job.

(Also, I actually liked the recent R&J)
