So I finally got a very nice lengha to wear for my nikah. I was trying it on and it finally dawned on me that the dupatta/pallu/veil (sorry, don’t know the right term for it), is a LOT heavier than it looked. It has a lot of work on the edges, and so weighs a ton!! I want to be able to wear it like the picture below, but I don’t know how. Any suggestions or tips on how to keep it in place (and on my head!) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
ps - I’ll post pics in a couple of weeks after the ceremony.
Ur beautician will know how to fix the bugger. They usually hold it in place with like 3 dozen bobby pins that go in ur hair piece plus safety pins that they use to fix it with the back of your shirt and hold it up so it doesn;t pull too much.
^ safety pinning the dupatta to the shirt is going to be fruitless if its very heavy.
the shirt is going to be dragged down with the weight of the duppatta.
They usually safetly pin the duppatta to the straps of your bra. So hold the duppatta up next to the shirt and the strap and pin it through.
The bra stays in place and is snug so it wont move up and down with the weight keeping the duppatta in place.
Thanks Femme Fatale and LegallyBrown. I called the salon to set an appointment and made sure they're aware they have to pin up the dupatta. It's gonna be at a non-desi salon (the town doesn't have any desi ones nearby), so it'll be interesting to see how things turn out. I'll be sure to keep plenty of bobby pins and safety pins handy.
My suggestion is that since you're going to a non-desi salon bring some pictures of how you want the dupatta pinned so you won't have issues explaining on the day of your wedding. Best of luck :)
Lots and lots of pins -- and others have said, your make-up person will know.
lots of bobby pins in your hair, but also some safety pins attached to the back of your shirt to help distribute weight. as LB pointed out, if the dupatta is heavy this can be tricky, but if you bunch it up a bit so that the dupatta has some give, it stays better. Many dupattas also get pinned along the arm or wrist, which looks nice.
I'd suggest finding a pakistani auntie in your area who can help out get you ready for the wedding. I also went to a non-desi hair/makeup salon and I even brought pics and pins. The girl couldn't figure out how to do it even with the help of the other sylists. I even asked her a month before if she had done it before and she was just agreeing to everything saying she had done a lot of pakistani girls before. When it actually came to the day I went to the salon, she was like wellll I thought it was a regular white veil. She didn't bother to even listen when I was explaining it to her. So I ended up not putting the dupatta on my head for the reception. My mom tried to do it but the dupattas weighed a ton and the pins couldn't carry the weight. I was told later on by some of my mom's friends that they could have helped me because you can buy some white thick band to tie in your hair and then you can pin the dupatta to that instead of your hair and it reduces the weight.
I have never seen eyes like that… her eyeballs are popping out.. freaky lolz.. she is soo ugly… There are a lot of other paki models that are wayy prettier… but I like her makeup.. it is cute..
Pins! that the only thing i can tell u, pinning it to ur hair the shoulders of ur shirt and the back of it should work
try it out w/ some of ur friends to see what works best
and i cant wait to see ur pics!! hope everything goes great
Ladies, once again, thank you very much for all the suggestions! My best friend and I are gonna spend tomorrow afternoon practising to figure out some ways to keep it up. I can't wait to show you guys the pics. I'll post them in about 2 weeks.
Ruiner, I'll try to see what I can do about finding some aunties who can help me. Inshallah something will be worked out. Thanks once again ladies.
I like Ruiner's idea - get some desi girls/aunties to help you. I doubt if the lady at the non desi salon would know how to put it on :) Good luck and best wishes on your nikah!
