Re: Bribe - Permissible OR impermissible
In my personal view, bribe or rishwat is
"A favor or money demanded or given for things that are unlawful and that is not your right"
the above definition could be more comprehensive but the gist of it is clear that bribe is given or demanded for something that is not your right lawfully. In Pakistan, situation is quite different. Here, in order to get your right, officials demand money from people and the reason being poor system of check and balances. So I think, if a person demands money from you for the things that are your right and if you stick to your 'pricipled' position, you suffer. In such case, i would prefer to pay that money and get it over with. In such case the onus is on that person who is exploiting.
Let me give you a real example. My power (electric) meter malfunctioned, I called the relevant department. A person arrived and said 'well, you have to pay that much amount and we will install it now'. I said no. I don't want to give any extra money for this. He siad 'ok then it may take up to six months'. I ignored his warning. wrote applications to authorites multiple times, met the SDO personally and did all that was according to the procedure but nothing happened. and yes after six months they came and installed a new meter. This meter didn't last long. Again a line man came and asked for money. I paid him before he could complete his sentence and the new meter was installed in half an hour. literally half an hour. This is just a soft example. There are many cases where you are forced to pay for a 'jaaiz' work.
Re: Bribe - Permissible OR impermissible
Peace kchughtai,
I heard briber and bribe taker both are for the hell. So bribe giving and taking is made so common among pplz that they don't have any fear while giving and taking.

yes I know what you are referring to but what is bribe? and what is the difference between 'ransom' and bribe
Re: Bribe - Permissible OR impermissible
Peace kchughtai,
That is what I wanna know about more. I think bribe and ransom are two different things.
Re: Bribe - Permissible OR impermissible

In simplistic terms, ransom is paid when you are in dire straits, and your life depends on it. Whereas bribe is usually paid to gain a shortcut. So there is a major difference, no doubt. Its similar to lying, which is ok if you do it for muslehat, but not ok when you do it to wiggle out of responsibility.
Re: Bribe - Permissible OR impermissible
Excuse me, since when is lying OK? Whether for muslehat or not. And who decides if the muslehat warrants a lie?
There was a time in Pakistan when if you wanted a bribe to do something you would say "ghar ajana, baat kerne" and in a low voice so no one could hear as it was righlty considered a no, no. Now it is "kuhle aam", out loud and no shame attached to it. And then you wonder why the country is where it is?
