Breast pads

This might sound as a daft question but what are breast pads used for?

Do you need to get some? if so, are disposable ones better or re-usable ones? how often are you meant to change them?

its on my hospital bag checklist so not sure whether i need them, i am planning on BF’ing.

i did do a quick search and the advice is not to use ones with plastic backing as you can get an infection, is this true?

Re: Breast pads

I didn't know would need them! But you will almost definitely need them. Especially in the early days when your body hasn't figured out how much milk to produce and how frequently, your milk will leak frequently. Also while the baby is nursing on one side, the other side will leak.

Re: Breast pads

Yup..!
You will need them and I too underestimated their importance.I used the NUK ones and they worked fine for me.They were the disposable kind and as to how often you change them, hmmm I think it varies.I used to do it few times a day in the earlier days. But you know when it is time to change them.

Re: Breast pads

I used to use the Johnson and Johnson ones the most. I tried the Lanolin ones but found they didn't stay in place as well. I changed them a few times a day initially, when there are more leaks, and less frequently later on, but I had to use them almost the entire year I was nursing.

Re: Breast pads

the joys of being pregnant eh! lol

did u guys have any irritation or itching with them? did they stay in place as well? are they noticeable when your wearing them as well?

Re: Breast pads

You DO need them!!! I bought the lanolin ones n they are working fine.. I do breast feed n pump as well but I guess that just increases the supple.. After a few soaked shirt incidents, I use them Noe... Didn't need them at the hospital though..I was too sore to have anything touch that, besides nthe milk didn't come in until the 4th or5th day n it wasn't much in the beginning.

Re: Breast pads

If they are itching or whatever, then you should change them. On the instructions it says to change them anytime they've gotten milk on them, cuz it is prone to bacteria.

They are not noticeable.

Re: Breast pads

Thank you lovely ladies for the advice! :D

i have noted down all the advice...

can you use nipple cream with the pads? also with the nipple cream do you have to remove it before BF'ing the little one?

Re: Breast pads

I use lanolin n no it doesn't need to be removed before bf'ing.

Re: Breast pads

^ lanolin nipple cream is the one recommended by midwives so i'll put that down on my list too... just checked it, pretty damn pricey for a small tube! lol

Re: Breast pads

^^Remember to check if the hospital gives out any too.I got 2 tubes from the hospital.
:)

Re: Breast pads

^ yup. and actually i didn't end up needing it. i was surprised.

Re: Breast pads

^ good thinking chips :) i will ask, doubt they will tho as the NHS are pretty tight at the moment

Re: Breast pads

Yeah my hospital was going to give me one too n I told them that I had it..my mom was like, "free dey rah hay, le leti" I was so dumb I even refused to take diapers n wipes from peds office when offered because I wanted them to show I was prepared for the baby n had it all!

But when he pped on himself I didn't have an extra change of clothes for him in my diaper bag..silly mommy:D

Re: Breast pads

you will def. need them. I used wool pads in the beginning eventhough it was June! after the first few weeks i started using disposable ones.

once he was 4 months I stopped leaking and havent used them for a month now...

just wondring..if u stop leaking does that mean u dont have enough milk?

Re: Breast pads

no, it means your body has figured out how much it needs and how frequently.

Re: Breast pads

thanks. thats nice to know:)

BTW, Sahar do work as health personell?

Re: Breast pads

I use lanolin also, and still using them daily even though i have been breastfeeding for 3 months.

Re: Breast pads

I still have those 2 tubes lying somewhere.Never used a lot of it.
