Breast feeding help

Salam all

I gave birth to my baby boy last week alhumdulillah we are both well:)

I didnt have much luck with bf with my daughter as she just wouldnt latch! My baby is latching but its just so painful plus he starts having thr milk n just falls asleep and so doesnt get full when i put him diwn hes up again within minutes to feed. Also at times he has milk from bith sides and when i put him down within half hour he wants more milk i dont understand whats going on because hes sucking for ages and i do have milk. This has bought me to formula feed at night because i did try to exvlusivly bf but i was up all night and its draining because i have my 15 minth old to look after too.

Will it get better? Any advice would be great

Im really sore any tips?

Re: Breast feeding help

Congratulations!
Well my kid had the same issues, so I had to supplement with formula too.

Mine is one month now and its the same still trying to figure out how to manage and cope. At times i give up and really want to start formula. Sorry i dont have much help but only advise i would like to give is if you are producing more than your baby is sucking plz hand express or pump out the extra milk. I got mastitis due to same thing and it was more painful than delivery so plz be careful and get info. You can pump some milk and use that instead of formula that is how your baby gets milk when needed and you wont get hurt every hour.

Re: Breast feeding help

I don’t have much advice, but Congratulations :flowers:

Re: Breast feeding help

here I found some threads for you… there is a lot of information there

The soreness should go away in another week or so. Ur body is just getting used to breastfeeding. If your baby falls asleep during feeding, tap him under the chin lightly or carress his cheek and he’ll suck again…keep him latched for at least 20 mins and he should get enough milk to keep him satisfied inshAllah. Also he’s very little and will probably feed every 1-2 hours until he’s 1-2 months old. Breastmilk is digested faster than formula…

If he’s drinking from both sides and is still hungry, you might not be producing enough milk. Try taking methi/fenugreek and oatmeal for more milk. Another important thing to remember is that breastfeeding works on a supply and demand basis - the more he feeds the more milk you will make. If you begin supplementing with formula, he will feed less and u will make less milk.

A good website to use is kellymom.com…it has loads of tips for breastfeeding/supplementing moms.

Hope this helps!

Oh and if ur still sore try lanolin!

Re: Breast feeding help

The first 6 weeks are really tough but once you stick it out it will get really easy.

See a lactation consultant. If your baby is latching well it shouldn’t be painful after the first few seconds. I also saw YouTube videos to help with the latch.

In the beginning the baby sucks a lot to build up supply. If he falls asleep then tickle his toes and circle his arms like a windmill to keep him awake. BF is hard work for babies  so they get tired. Try to avoid supplementing too much at night for the first 6 weeks as it will affect your supply.

kellymom website is invaluable for breast feeding.

Also use lansinoh if you have bruised or sore nipples. Best of luck

Re: Breast feeding help

Congrats!
With my 2nd one, I was literally bf all day all night long, it was so draining and exhausting. He will be turning 3 months mashallah, it has gone a lot better. He is now sleeping @ a stretch of 4 hours at night.

Many times kids suck for comfort but are not really drinking milk. Try using pacifier.

Ask your husband to help you with the older one when he is home from work.

Re: Breast feeding help

I have a few questions:

Who here ebf’d? And did you freeze your milk? What system was the best for you? Did you hire a lactation consultant? Did it help? What was the biggest challenge?

I hear its painful…lanolin cream is what I am getting out of a lot of the posts as the thing to use. This is right?

Did anyone have trouble in the beginning and then find success?

Re: Breast feeding help

Baby #1](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=1) would not latch right. I ebf’d for a month … in pain with cracks! Finally gave up and decided to pump. And eventually gave that up as well.

Baby #2](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=2) latched on like a dream from day one. Never had an issue. No cracks and it was totally pain free. Ebf’d for 11 months.

Baby #3](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=3) latched on initially … but a couple of days into it it started hurting. I ended up with deep cracks on both sides. It felt like I was going to pass out every time he latched on to it. :hayaa: Thank god for baby #2](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=2) and the fact that I knew how amazing ebf could be … I went to see a lactation consultant. She helped us get the right latch and recommended a nipple shield.
The nipple shield was life saving. If it weren’t for that thing I would have given up! It’s one of the best inventions everrrr and now I always recommend it to new mommies who are frustrated with breastfeeding.

Now I feed on demand and pump around 8 oz extra each day for my freezer stash (my just in case something happens and I have to stop nursing stash)

I would suggest being seen by a lactation nurse at the hospital before discharge! It’s such a pain going to see one when you’re back home.

Re: Breast feeding help

So see a lactation consultant before discharge.

Nipple shields

I found a recipe for padsicles Wendy…had no idea what they were but I think I’ll try making some

There’s so much to learn…:naak:

Re: Breast feeding help

Padsicles are AMAZINGGGGG!!! I used them for two weeks after I had my baby  Make a couple of batches!

Re: Breast feeding help

I had loads of problems first 4 months, even posted here in tears feeling very helpless.
We’ve had awful latch, reflux, over supply and blocked ducts.
I persevered and now at 12 months, breastfeeding is a breeze. Though I feel I’m ready to stop but little girl seems to have other plans.
Lansinoh (lanolin cream) was a life saver.
All the best. I found great advice here from lovely experienced ladies x

Re: Breast feeding help

The first two weeks can be tough as both you and baby are constantly figuring out what to do. It DOES get better. Keep at it as best as you can! Talk to the lactation consultant and pediatrician.

Also remember that the baby may not be hungry if feeding more than once an hour. It might help to:
-swaddle
-lay the baby on an incline to avoid reflux (prop the head up a little)
