Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

Salaam everyone,

Ramadan coming up inshallah Allah I wanted some advice on breast feeding 10 month old baby while fasting.

I have heard its really hard fasting and breast feeding I don’t want to give up breast feeding of fasting and I want to know if there are other mothers been through this last Ramadan and how did they cope.

Breast feeding and fasting in the manth of Ramadan

I did not fast at all while breastfeeding. There is no way I could have kept up my milk supply while fasting..I made up missed ramadans after my kids were weaned off of breast milk. Allah has given you an exception for a valid and noble reason..no reason to take stress upon yourself and worry about when you can make up your missed rozas later

re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

When Ramadan is during Winter some women manage to cope with fasting and breastfeeding however during longer summer days it’s a different ball game. Plus it’s advisable to breastfeed until a child is older than 10 months so I agree with Khatti. You can InshAllah make up the fasts after as it’s something you have the right to do.

I’m diabetic; and struggle to fast during long days as my sugar levels rise wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much. My Doctors have advised me to keep the fasts in the colder months as it’s easier on the body so relax.

I am no aalim but any act that could put your or your baby’s health at risk is no longer an obligation on you. Take care of your baby this summer and makeup your fast in December. Allah will give you twice the award

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

ditto to all the above replies. fasting will decrease your breast milk supply. feed your baby and make up your fasts later inshallah. in the meantime, you can donate food/money to those who are fasting so they have enough food for ramadan and earn sawab that way

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

I made up last years fasts during the winter and that too, i had to fast one day on and one day off as otherwise my milk supply would’ve been affected.

This year I’ll be fasting along with everyone else as kiddo only really breastfeeds once or twice a day now that he’s started on solids.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

Yup I agree with the others. Fasting is not farz for you when you’re nursing. If you don’t eat you won’t produce any milk!

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

I asked my pediatrician to prescribe formula for my 10 months old and he said increase her meals rather than going on formula. It is basically ur and ur baby’s convenience, make a choice accordingly. give ur bub enough meals in between and feed him mostly in the morning and after iftar if u opt for fasting

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

My son’s ped said that he needs to take 30oz of milk in a day till 12 months. I don’t know what is your ped’s background but I will not cut down his milk.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

My son is 6 months old and his pediatrician said he needs to take at least 24 oz milk a day. My sister in law was told that 32oz a day is recommended. I guess as long as he’s getting anywhere in between 24-28 oz a day I am happy. My son was never big on milk. He loves his fruits and veggies thou but its a struggle getting him to drink milk.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

^^ my son went through this phase too b/w 6-7.5 months.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

your reason may NOT be a valid shara’ii reason to skip fasting in the month of Ramadhan unless told by a doctor to do so due to baby’s absolute need to have breast milk. women through out the the ages since the inception of Islam have been breast-feeding their children and fasting at the same time. you must have a valid need in sharia to skip obligatory fast.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

I disagree with you KK faakhta, in fact, I’m enraged at your absolutely nonsensical suggestion that she fast and breastfeed. Please provide references for your absolutely inaccurate assumption that women have been doing so since the inception of Islam.

Surah 2:183 - 187 tell you everything you need to know:

[2:183] O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you, as it was decreed for those before you, that you may attain salvation.
Footnote

[2:184] Specific days (are designated for fasting); if one is ill or traveling, an equal number of other days may be substituted. Those who can fast, but with great difficulty, may substitute feeding one poor person for each day of breaking the fast. If one volunteers (more righteous works), it is better. But fasting is the best for you, if you only knew.

[2:185] Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein. Those who are ill or traveling may substitute the same number of other days. GOD wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify GOD for guiding you, and to express your appreciation.

[2:186] When My servants ask you about Me, I am always near. I answer their prayers when they pray to Me. The people shall respond to Me and believe in Me, in order to be guided.

[2:187] Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are the keepers of your secrets, and you are the keepers of their secrets. GOD knew that you used to betray your souls, and He has redeemed you, and has pardoned you. Henceforth, you may have intercourse with them, seeking what GOD has permitted for you. You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn. Then, you shall fast until sunset. Sexual intercourse is prohibited if you decide to retreat to the masjid (during the last ten days of Ramadan). These are GOD’s laws; you shall not transgress them. GOD thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they may attain salvation.

Basically, if fasting is a difficulty for you, you don’t have to fast and NO, you may NOT make up a missed fast for any reason other than being ill or traveling. For missing a fast for any other reason, you must atone by feeding one poor person or if you can’t afford that, doing some other righteous work/service for others.

Aa jaatay hain sab maulwi ke maulvi with ZERO references.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

How is it not a valid reason??? :konfused: If she fasts and does not eat all day she will not produce any milk. Her supply will go down. Baby will not get any milk!!! I see that as a very good reason.

If I skip a meal, I notice a huge drop in my supply. I am not fasting this year.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

I fasted last Ramadan with my 2 month old baby .. N Alhamdulillah it went good… As everybody said if u fear about ur milk supply u can totally skip it… ..
but I felt I had good supply even more in ramzan.. I just left 3-4 fast wheni felt I was tired n would not be able to take care of baby ..
plus I use to eat 1 tsp heaped saunf and methi mixed in equal proportions and then grind it .. N take it with water.. Keep up with ur prenatals. Eat dates and drink lots of water after Iftar…

Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

My father is an Imam and Islamic scholar. I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and he has told me not to fast as long as I am feeding the baby. He told me it is in the Quran that fasting is excused for nursing mothers, but I do have to make them up.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

^ Yes that’s my understanding too Saima, that fasts do need to be made up later…although I’m surprised at the number of people who believe you don’t need to or that giving the money to charity instead is an alternative. Anyway, I don’t want to spark any debates that belong in the religion forum. Everyone does what they feel is in their childs best interests and Allah knows best.

Re: Breast feeding and fasting in the month of Ramadan

Totally agree with you - also want to reiterate your point which goes against what most others have been saying on here: if you can’t fast while breastfeeding, Allah tells us to pay to feed a poor person - NOT make up the fasts another time. A woman is pregnant for 9 months, goes through labour and then the Quran advises us to breastfeed for around 2 years - that totals around 3 years of missed fasts. Allah (swt) is not so unjust as to expect women to make up 3 years’ of missed fasts once we’ve stopped breastfeeding! There’s a reason why there is that clause to feed a poor person!
