ABBOTTABAD: Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the Sept 11, 2001 attacks that killed almost 3,000 people and put the United States on a decade-long war footing, was killed late Sunday night in Abbottabad by a joint American and Pakistani team, senior security officials said on Monday.
“Yes, I can confirm that,” one senior intelligence official told Reuters, but declined to give further details.
Another security official in Peshawar confirmed it was a joint operation between CIA and Pakistani security forces.
“It was carried out on a very precise info that some high-value target is there,” he said.
A Pakistani military helicopter crashed near Abbottabad on Sunday night, killing one and wounding two, according to Pakistani media. It was unclear if the crash was related to bin Laden’s death, but witnesses reported gunshots and heavy firing before one of two low-flying helicopters crashed near the Pakistani Military Academy.
The police blocked the road leading to Pakistan’s military academy, a Reuters photographer on the scene reported.
“I have seen tail and two wings of the chopper,” a labourer told Reuters. The fact bin Laden was apparently living in relative luxury not far from Islamabad could pose awkward questions for Pakistan.
“For some time there will be a lot of tension between Washington and Islamabad because Bin Laden seems to have been living here close to Islamabad,” said Imtiaz Gul, a security analyst.
“If the ISI had known then somebody within the ISI must have leaked this information. Pakistan will have to do a lot of damage control because the Americans have been reporting he is in Pakistan. This is a serious blow to the credibility of Pakistan.”
But defence analyst and former general Talat Masood said the fact bin Laden was killed in a joint operation would limit the damage to Pakistan’s image. “There should be a sigh of relief because this will take some pressure off of Pakistan,” said defence analyst and former general Talat Masood. “Pakistan most probably has contributed to this, and Pakistan can take some credit for this – being such an iconic figure, it’s a great achievement.”

ok so another conspiracy theory already in play..............how could ISI hide osama in malaysia or anyother country? ISI is well connected but nothing in comparison to CIA who is much more resourceful on a global basis..CIA would have easily figured it out...the best bet for ISI was to hide osama somewhere in pak where they have full control of all the issues....and they did exactly that by placing him in abbotabad which is a military base (very few civilians, small isolated town) and therefore it was much easy to control the issues....
and if osama was dead long time ago, whose dead body is america going to display now? I am sure that would be a fake dead body too....

Mushy the great and Zardari the greatest has given liberties to the CIA operative ( raymond davis comes to mind) they are living all over Pakistan and no Pakistani authority was and is allowed to mess with them... again Raymond Davis comes to mind...
American were and are moving freely without being checked at any point or by any security agency... are you aware of that???
do you know that a body can be preserved for long time if wanted??? do you know that for such preservation the cool environment of Abottabad would be ideal location, as it summer capital of KP and have all the facilities with little attention???
ISI already have to do lots of explaination about the 300+ raymond davises in Pakistan and Pakisatni Embassador in US and UAE have to do lots of explanation about issuing visa to American without following the procedures laid out by ISI...

If i steal something which is being searched by everyone in the world, and i am a suspect as well, then the last thing i would do is, hide it in my stronghold... but if someone want to frame me, would certainly put it in the location which is my strong hold...

Declaring “justice has been done,” President Obama announced late Sunday that Usama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan, marking the end of the worldwide manhunt that began nearly a decade ago on Sept. 11, 2001.
The president made the stunning announcement within hours of informing congressional leaders. The U.S. had been waiting for the results of a DNA test to confirm his identity before going public.
Obama, in an address to the nation, thanked the Americans who have toiled in pursuit of bin Laden and applauded those who carried out the successful mission in Pakistan. Describing that mission only briefly, he said its result “is a testament to the greatness of our country.”
“For over two decades, bin Laden has been Al Qaeda’s leader and symbol,” Obama said. “The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat Al Qaeda.”
The president traced the death of bin Laden to a tip received last August. He said he was briefed at the time on the “possible lead,” and that after months of intelligence work it was determined bin Laden was hiding in a compound “deep” inside Pakistan. Obama said, after determining the intelligence was sound, he authorized the operation to bring him to justice last week.
He said a “small team” of Americans went after bin Laden. “After a firefight, they killed Usama bin Laden and took custody of his body,” the president said.
In light of bin Laden’s death, authorities around the world are being urged to take security precautions. One source said officials are concerned bin Laden’s death could incite violence or terrorist acts against U.S. personnel overseas.
Obama said Americans must continue to be “vigilant.” But he said the death of the architect of the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil should be welcomed around the world.
“Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims,” Obama said. “So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.”
Sources said the vice president informed congressional leaders late Sunday night that the world’s most wanted man had been killed.
The announcement comes nearly a decade after the 2001 terror attacks which triggered the Afghanistan war and started a tireless hunt for the terrorist mastermind and Al Qaeda leader.
In recent years, that hunt had increasingly led U.S. intelligence across the border and into Pakistan, where Al Qaeda is thought to be concentrated.

from musharraf to gilani to zardari to rehman malik and others...pakistan has always vehemently denied that he was hiding in pakistan - dismissing it as if it were laughable. what a joke.
with it being revealed that osama was living comfortably in a mansion near islamabad, now pakistan has to choose between two highly embarrassing options: either looking like the biggest, most incompetent fools on earth or the more likely scenario of being his chief protector and harboring him.
imagine if there were no raymond davises doing their jobs in pakistan. this murderer would probably never have been found.

We just want Americans and Al Qaeeda/terrorist out of our country. It doesn't matter the role of Pakistan army in the killing of OBL.. the mere fact that he was hiding in Pakistan and found here will create bigger perception problem for Pakistan which prior to this incident wasn't great. It's high time our military leadership give up any global agenda if they have any, and have some mercy on the poor people who have a bigger problem of providing food and education to their children...

no i did not miss the point...i understood that you referred to Malaysia as an example and I responded accordingly that it was extremely difficult for ISI to hide him anywhere outside Pakistan… so you are suggesting that all those US agents who were on Pakistani soil probably killed Osama long time ago, preserved his dead body by placing him in Abbottabad to ridicule and defame Pakistan ………what can I say!!! Nope, Osama was Kidney patient, needing dialysis on regular basis, now i am not an expert on the kidney and dialysis but i do know that such patient would need to get the process done every 2 weeks and this frequency can go to as low to 1 day... now is possible for such patient to hide??? or for any organization such as ISI to hide him for this long period ( as per my info, there are not many dialysis centers in Pakistan) alive???

The trail that led the CIA to Osama bin Laden began with his most trusted courier. It had taken the CIA years to discover first his name and then the home where he was hiding bin Laden. But it took only 40 minutes on Sunday for US special forces to kill both the courier and bin Laden.
Contrary to repeated speculation over the last decade that bin Laden was living in one of the remote tribal areas of Pakistan or even across the border in Afghanistan, the al-Qaida leader was found in an affluent suburb of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.
Senior US administration officials, briefing journalists in a late-night teleconference, said that after 9/11 the CIA chased various leads about bin Laden’s inner circle, in particular his couriers. One of these couriers came in for special attention, mentioned by detainees by his nom de guerre and said to be one of the few couriers bin Laden trusted.
But officials said they were initially unable to identify him but finally did four years ago. They did not disclose his name to reporters Sunday night.
Two years ago, the CIA found the rough location where the courier and his brother lived in Pakistan, and on August last year they narrowed it down to a compound, in an affluent area about 35 miles north of Islamabad.
**They realised immediately this was no normal residence. The walls were 12-18ft high, topped with barbed wire. Access to the compound was severely restricted. The main part of the residence was three storeys high but had few windows. It was valued at about $1 million but had no phone or internet connection. It was a custom-built terrorist hideaway.
Adding to their suspicions were that the two brothers had no known source of income. The CIA learned too that there was a family living with them and that this family matched bin Laden’s.**
By February, the CIA was confident this was bin Laden’s likely hiding place and in March Barack Obama began chairing a series of five national security meetings. At the last of these, on 29 April, he gave the order to mount an operation.
The US military began planning. One of the senior administration officials said: “The high walls made this a dangerous operation.” It was a surgical operation, he said, carried out by a small team and lasted only 40 minutes.
Bin Laden and three males were killed, including the courier and his brother, and bin Laden’s son. Bin Laden resisted the US force and was killed in a firefight, an official said.
One woman was injured while, an official said, she was being used as a shield by one of the men, and two other women were also injured.
The US force ran into a problem with one of their helicopters which had to be abandoned, but only after being destroyed by explosives set by the American troops.
