Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, who is facing impeachment by parliament, says he will resign.

The charges against the president include violation of the constitution and gross misconduct.

Mr Musharraf said he had always put the interests of Pakistan and its people first and was confident that the charges against him would not stand.

But he said this was not the time for more confrontation and he was resigning after consulting his advisers.

Truth and lies

Mr Musharraf said that when he took over in a military coup in 1999, Pakistan was going to be declared a failed state and faced great economic challenges.

He said that “false allegations were made against me” by people who “tried to turn the truth into lies”.

Dressed soberly in a dark suit and tie, he then started a long defence of the country’s economic record, detailing the progress he said it had made under his rule.

He said the problems Pakistan faced could be solved if people worked together and believed in themselves.

Mr Musharraf decided to address the nation as ministers warned over the weekend that impeachment proceedings against him could begin as early as Tuesday of this week.

Mr Musharraf, the former army chief and a key ally in Washington’s war on terror, came to power in a bloodless coup in 1999.

He was forced to give up control of the armed forces last year.

The president’s public standing suffered a huge setback in 2007 when he sacked Pakistan’s chief justice and nearly 60 judges to prevent them from overturning his re-election as president.

But analysts say the president is still thought to have heavy influence over the military and its reaction will remain crucial.

As uncertainity vanishes now.

Govt needs to move fast, restore judges & get on with doing its job. Mushrraf is no longer excuse...

India needs to be careful now.

Musharraf united this country. This is in his credit. All the four provinces never stood united as they were recently in opposing him.

Musharraf announces resignation

ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf announced in a televised address to the nation Monday that he had decided to resign after nine years in power to avoid the threat of impeachment.

"After viewing the situation and consulting legal advisers and political allies, with their advice I have decided to resign," a grim-faced Musharraf said, backed by Pakistani flags and a portrait of the country’s founder.

“I leave my future in the hands of people.”

Musharraf made the shock announcement after denying that any of the impeachment charges against him could stand and launching into a lengthy defence of his time in power.

“Not a single charge in the impeachment can stand against me,” Musharraf said. “No charge can be proved against me because I never did anything for myself, it was all for Pakistan.”

He said that there was now law and order in the country, that human rights and democracy had been improved and that Pakistan was now an crucial country internationally.

“On the map of the world, Pakistan is now an important country, by the grace of Allah,” he said.

Nawaz calls party meeting amid president’s resignation buzz

Sources said that Nawaz Sharif could be nominated as a presidential candidate in the meeting. Immediate restoration of deposed judges will also come under discussion.

He has left his fate to the people of this great land....our people have short memories though....!!!

Re: Breaking News: Musharraf resigns

Pakistan is always in a hanging position so his resignation doesn't make any difference. Suppose if Zardari comes as the president... :|* trying to imagine and horrifying*
