How does calling someone a monkey constitute racial abuse? What's the background behind it? Would calling someone a snake, a dog, a pig be okay or is that racial abuse too?

Why would a black guy be any more of a monkey than a white guy or brown guy or yellow guy? Besides, judging by the color of skin, Symonds doesn't look black at all.

Stop thinking out of your arse. People call each other names all the time. Calling another person a dog, a pig, or a snake is just bad manners and bad form. That doesn't make it racial abuse.

Look, if there is proof that Harbhajan called Symonds a monkey, by all means he should be banned. But where is the proof ? Procter was on TV the other day saying that the umpires had not heard anything, and they hadnt been able to get anything from the TV cameras and onfield mikes. So what is this ruling based on ? The word of 3 Aussie players (Hayden, Symonds and Clarke) claiming they heard tyhis against that of Harbhajan who says he didnt and Tendulkar who agrees with Harbhajan ?
No way this is going to hold up - unless there is a whole lot of new information that came out at the hearing that we still dont know of.

i think mike poctor took it as 3-2(hayden,symonds,clarke in favour and sachin ,bhajji against) voting and ruled against harbhajan.As ind,Aus r democracies so majority counts hence the ban for bhajji.
now only way this ruling can be overturned by dictatorship of BCCI(through its money power).With no Dalmiya its not possible at all as the great spineless maratha sharad pawar is heading it with the bunch of some marwadi jokers.

I hope they challenge the ban and go the lenght neccessary to get bajji cleared ..... Or even withdraw from the Tour ...... that's the only lingo Aussies (esp Ponting) understands ......
A withdraw is highly unlikely but hopefully Indian management does whatever neccessary to offend the Aussies

That's what I am trying to understand. What connotation does a monkey have with being black? Also, would most Indian public back in October 07 have known Symonds was black? Until I read it in an article today, I didn't know Symonds was black.

there is no way indian management is going to let this ban stay unless there was new evidence against harbhajan, i dont see how match referee ruled against bhajji, but lets see news tomorrow
BCCI says tour will not be abandoned, but if ICC does not reverse the ban, then it might become reality

India isn't likely to pull out of tour. They'll appeal, might possibly get the ban overturned, but even if it isn't overturned, the tour will stay on.
