Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

Now that question is Sunni or Shia?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

He is a refugee though. Could he be a Sunni refugee from Iran? He is a self proclaimed cleric.

Apparently he has demanded an ISIS flag but I doubt he is connected to them. The lights of the cafe have been turned off and he says he has 2 bombs planted in cafe and 2 planted somewhere else in CBD.

Yesterday he posted on his facebook. "Islam is the religion of peace and all good Muslims were duty bound to fight the oppressor the US and allies like Australia."

The guy was given refuge by the country and this is what he does. I don't get it if they don't like the system of the West why do they feel compelled to stay here? If they want to fight oppressors why not go to Syria or wherever why target innocents.

Sydney (CNN) – Gunfire erupted early Tuesday as police stormed the Sydney cafe where a gunman had been holding hostages.
The crisis appeared to be over, Australian state broadcaster ABC reported.
ABC reported that two people were dead and three were in serious condition.
Seven people had been taken out of the Sydney cafe on stretchers, and five of them appeared to be receiving treatment immediately, the broadcaster reported.

The fate of the gunman, identified by an official with direct knowledge of the situation as Man Haron Monis, was unknown. It was also unknown if any police were injured.
Hundreds of police officers, including snipers, had surrounded the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Sydney’s central business district shortly after the gunman took over the building at 10 a.m. Monday* (6 p.m. ET on Sunday).*
Chilling images from Australian media on Monday showed people, believed to be hostages, with their hands pressed against the cafe’s windows. They were holding up a black flag with Arabic writing on it reading, “There is no God but God and Mohammed is the prophet of God.”
Five hostages sprinted out of the cafe toward heavily armed police officers several hours into the standoff, sending the gunman into an agitated tirade, according to an Australian reporter.

Chris Reason, a correspondent for CNN affiliate Seven Network, said the gunman became “extremely agitated” when he realized what had happened and “started screaming orders” at the remaining hostages.
Reason said he could see the gunman pacing past the cafe’s windows from his vantage point at the network’s nearby offices. He described the man as unshaven, wearing a white shirt and black cap and carrying a shotgun.
The gunman demanded a flag and phone call through hostages who contacted several media organizations, CNN affiliate Sky News Australia reported.
Some had also reportedly posted messages to social networking sites and the YouTube online video service. Police urged media early Tuesday not to show the videos.
Monis, also known as Sheikh Haron, pleaded guilty in 2013 to writing letters to Australian service members saying they were “Hitler’s soldiers,” according to Australian media reports.
He was believed to be acting alone and does not appear to be part of a broader plot, additional U.S. law enforcement and intelligence sources said Monday.
Beyond the demands for the flag and phone call, precisely what he wanted remained murky late Monday.
As night fell, Reason said the cafe’s lights had been turned off, plunging the interior into “complete darkness.”
In what appeared to be a dramatic ending to the hostage situation early Tuesday morning, police could be seen throwing flash-bang grenades into the cafe in video aired by CNN affiliate Seven Network.
Gunfire erupted amid the chaos. After a brief episode of violence, the crisis appeared to ease, with police officers assuming a more relaxed pose, according to ABC.
It’s unclear how many hostages were in the building at the time.
Before some of the hostages had fled, Seven Network reported that at least 13 people were being held at the cafe, but police declined to say how many were in there. New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said it was fewer than 30.
The incident left Australians shaken.
“We are doing all we can to set you free,” New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said at a news conference Monday, hours before Tuesday’s rescue attempt, directing his comments to the hostages and their loved ones.
Abbott called the incident “profoundly shocking.”

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

One of the articles I read said that he posted online this year that he “used to be Rafidi and now is Muslim”. Since Rafidi is a derogatory term for Shias used by extremist Sunnis who think that Shias are not Muslim, this suggests that he was formerly nominally a shia and nominally became a sunni.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

Looks like he has been killed and so has 1 hostage. 2 people with serious injuries. Plus some others injured. Sad about the hostage who was killed. This is the first event in Australia so there will be consequences and probably tougher laws. Don't need this image at this point in time.
He has some yt videos with his speeches. Wonder why he left Iran for refuge elsewhere? Is it because of his religious beliefs or other reasons?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

I doubt it was for his religious beliefs as I now read that it was only last week that he claimed to have converted from Shia to Sunni Islam.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

Its a catch 22 for white countries. If they keep an eye on lunatics like this then liberals accuse them of discrimination against minorities. But when these people show their true color then same liberals blame from for inefficiency and hard liners blame them for not doing enough.

Though his is one off case and has nothing to do with his society but still its enough to scare native people of hosting country.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

thank God it's all over and the terrorist is dead. one life of the innocent hostage lost is regrettable and we all pray for him/her. RIP and the terrorist burn in eternal hellfire. no Hoor for you! :D

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

True. This is first time something like this has happened in Australia. I am glad that so many Australians have acted maturely and against racism by speaking out against twitter with the #i](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=i) 'll ride with you hash tag. All my non-Muslim desi and non desi friends have tweeted it. So i’m hoping the aftermath of all this is ok.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

Now there are 2 known deaths of hostages and some injured hostages. I hope no more dead. You are right. The terrorist will burn in hell.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

So the guy was Iranian, I don't think he had to do anything with ISIS. The media is portraying him as a Lone Ranger who has a string of charges including killing his wife and sexual charges against his name.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

not only he was an Iranian, he also was a cleric [probably an Ayatollah]. he had a long list of arrests for harassing soldier' families who fought in AfGhanistan.

i don't understand why he, being a Shi'a, had put an ISIS flag in the window. as far as i know, Iran is fighting a proxy war against ISIS in Iraq N Syria. what's going on?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

Maybe to put the focus on Isis, police guys know him well. They should now let people know who he really was. At this stage of time he seems to be a deranged lunatic.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

let's hope so that he was a lunatic and not a terrorist or just a lone terrorist with no links to some organized terror groups. this will save the Australian Muslims undue focus.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

He asked for an ISIS flag. Apparently he wanted to decapitate someone and send video abroad to be used. Probably not related to ISIS but he seems inspired by it. He asked police for ISIS flag and contacted radio station to make hostage give hate message but host refused.
He sent disturbing letters to families of dead Australian soldiers. So seemed like he was against US and allies and what they are doing. But i don’t understand if they are against it why not go to Afghanistan or Syria to fight, why attack innocent people.
He also had lot of sexual offences.

I am happy he is not a desi.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

According to his website he changed from Shia to Sunni. And he was a refugee so he could be a Sunni refugee escaping from Iran.

Man Haron Monis: what we know about gunman killed in Sydney siege | Australia news | The Guardian

Until his entry into the global media spotlight as the shadowy figure at the centre of the Sydney siege, Man Haron Monis had long been viewed as a fringe figure in Sydney’s Islamic community, his self-radicalisation rooted in grievances against the Australian government and increasing marginalisation among his peers.
The self-proclaimed spiritual healer had achieved a degree of notoriety as the author of “grossly offensive” letters sent to taunt parents and relatives of Australians killed by extremism in Indonesia as well as troops who lost their lives in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2009.
Well known to the Australian police, he had been consumed by his conviction for the offence, unsuccessfully challenging the conviction in the high court last year and making several vehement and erratic public statements claiming to be innocent.
He also faced numerous charges relating to his time working as a “spiritual healer” – including 22 counts of aggravated sexual assault and 14 counts of aggravated indecent assault – and had been bailed for allegedly being an accessory to the killing of his former wife.
When Monis, who was also known as Mohammad Hassan Manteghi, appeared in court in October over the sex assault allegations, police charged him with 40 additional offences. It was alleged that he had advised a 27-year-old woman to visit him at his business in Wentworthville in 2002 after she contacted him through a “Spiritual Consultation” ad in a community newspaper.
He was charged last year with being an accessory to the murder of his 30-year-old former wife Noleen Hayson Pal, a mother-of-two who was allegedly stabbed to death and set alight in April 2013.
Iranian-born, Monis sought asylum in Australia in 1996, telling ABC News in 2001 he fled after falling foul of the Iranian regime, which he said had placed his wife and children under house arrest. “I can say they are hostage,” he said at the time, having reportedly given himself the title Sheikh Haron.

As recently as last week on a website he used both to defend and promote himself, he announced that he had converted from Shia to Sunni Islam. That website was shut down as Monday’s siege developed, and police asked media outlets to refrain from giving him a platform as he held 17 hostages in the Lindt cafe in Martin Place.
Sydney Shia leaders had apparently urged federal police to probe his claim to be a leading cleric, while he was ignored by the Sunni community. He had no links to the Islamic State terrorist group, and despite his criminal past was not seen as a likely exponent of the group’s ideology.
One upshot, some would argue, is that he fits bill of a classic lone wolf – a profile that had been much feared by security officials. Monis is believed to have been a self-starter, who had attached himself to the virulent worldview of Isis. His self-radicalisation appeared to be rooted in grievances against the government and fueled by his increasing marginalisation.
Earlier this month, Monis had posted on his website that Shia muslims were rejectionists – a key message of extremist Sunnis in the Middle East.
But there were other hints on the web post that Monis had become radicalised: a rambling October letter he penned to the Muslim community rejected the “new religion” of moderate Islam. ‘This pen is my gun and these words are my bullets, I fight by these weapons against oppression to promote peace,’ he wrote.
An image on the website appears to show Monis wearing the same headband that photographs suggest he donned during the Martin Place siege, reading: “We are ready to sacrifice for you, O Muhammad.”
Shortly after Tony Abbott’s government was elected in September last year, Monis sent the prime minister a letter inviting him to a live debate in which he said he would prove that “Australia and Australians will be attacked” as a result of the country’s participation in the war in Afghanistan.
Manny Conditsis, a lawyer who represented Monis at one point, has decribed his former client as an isolated figure who might have felt that he had nothing to lose, “hence participating in something as desperate and outrageous as this”.
“His ideology is just so strong and so powerful that it clouds his vision for common sense and objectiveness,” Conditsis told ABC news.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

He looks like a lone wolf who watched too much extreme material online.
It's been quite heartening to see all supportive tweets and messages on social media for Australian Muslims so i don't think there will be much backlash. This guy clearly was not free to roam the streets with all his past offences. His punishment for sending threatening letters to those families was 200 hrs community service. He even tried to appeal against this decision saying he had freedom of speech to say what he wanted.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

^ thanx for the info...

..Khas kam, jahaaN paak!

he is dealt with and he may now rot in hell...good bye Mr. Monis! you are better dead than alive! :)

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Gunman [Daish?] takes hostages in Sydney cafe

KKF bhai I should thank you for bringing us this news. I was thinking of heading that direction. Not to the cafe but to the city area then I read this forum thread before watching the news. On the news they mentioned Stephen Harper and other PMs including from subcontinent sent their condolences.

I feel sad for future refugees. Some people may have suspicions or doubts on refugees coming to Australia.
