Helicopters are routinely used by the Pakistani army
A senior Pakistani army officer is among eight people killed in a helicopter crash in the restive South Waziristan region, the army says.
The army helicopter carrying Maj Gen Javed Sultan crashed because of a technical fault near the Afghan border, an army spokesman told the BBC.
Maj Gen Sultan was in charge of fighting pro-Taleban militants in North and South Waziristan.
The army says that at least two other senior officers were killed.
The helicopter reportedly came down between the towns of Jandola and Wana at roughly 1440 local time (0940 GMT)
According to the BBC’s Syed Shoaib Hasan in Islamabad, the death of Maj Gen Sultan will dent morale among Pakistani troops who have already suffered heavy casualties in the region.
Hours before the crash was reported, Taleban militants based in Pakistan said they were scaling back operations against the military.
Guerrillas loyal to a local pro-Taleban commander, Baitullah Mehsud, have been fighting government forces in the Waziristan region of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province
look like its due to shoulder fired rocket from our beloved citizens or their guests.
Re: Breaking News: General killed in Pakistan crash
I can't say that I have much sympathy for any of these guys...just that they met their due fate.
how sinister they may be, I would rather sympathise with their souls who died in action for the National Army.
I would have greater sympathy for them compared to sum bunch of lunatics who are creating problems for ordinary people of Pakistan in name of so called "jihad".
they should all go to Afghanistan and Iraq instead of hiding in Pakistan so they can have a proper chance to wage jihad against the infidals.
Re: Breaking News: General killed in Pakistan crash
It was not a rocket hit. The helicopter flew from 5 Sindh Regiment's camp in bad weather due to insistence of the two young pilots that it's ok and just an 8 min flight. As they gained altitude, they were suddenly engulfed in complete clouds and they attempted to return to ground but pilots lost control and crashed. Helicopter started burning and no body could escape.
Pilot was heard telling every body in cabin to start reciting Kalma as they might crash as nothing is visible. Brig Afzal Cheema attempted to call his brother on his mobile 7 seconds before his crash however could not connect.
