Aslamoalakum…in the past two weeks, we (my family) have broken like 10 things made of glass, and i was wondering, since thats sorta odd, if you guys know whether or not it could be considered somethin like its some sorta bad omen, or to take it as a coincidence…and what does islam have to say about these kind of superstitions?
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
I don't think Islam condones any kind of superstitions. Allah is omni-potent. A broken glass is not going to affect you, one way or the other. However, you can definitely use the opportunity to increase your remembrance of Allah, by way of salah and dua.
ps. If you suspect someone is casting spells of black magic on you (or your family) then Quran warns about it, and there are ayahs which you can recite. But superstitions, like breaking items made of glass, black cat crossing your way etc should not be a cause of concern.
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
and black magic isnt superstition? ![]()
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
No.
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
wow.. does that mean all muslims believe in black magic? what about the "black eye"/kali nazar?
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
A muslim believes in Qur'an. The word "magic" is mentioned in the Qur'an 60 times.
In one place Almighty Allah says: "And follow that which the devils falsely related against the kingdom of Solomon. Solomon disbelieved not; but the devils disbelieved, teaching mankind magic and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babel, Harut and Marut. Nor did they (the two angels) teach it to anyone till they had said: We are only a temptation, therefore disbelieve not (in the guidance of Allah). And from these two (angels) people learn that by which they cause division between man and wife; but they injure thereby no one save by Allah's leave. And they learn that which harm them and profit them not. And surely they do know that he who traffic therein will have no (happy) portion in the Hereafter; and surely evil is the price for which they sell their souls, if they but knew." (Al-Baqarah: 102 )
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
^^ Yup read it myself.
Thanx Faisal
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
spot on :k:
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
and the "magic" referred to in the Qur'an is interpreted literally by most muslims?
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
Once you believe in magic, how do you draw a line? Maybe someone has cast a spell that causes the family to break things made of glass.
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
lol … now who’d do such a silly thing? ![]()
There is a very distinct line. An omen is an omen, magic is magic. How can you confuse the two? ![]()
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
If you believe in magic and that people can cast spells, then why wouldn't it be possible? Samantha Stevens was limited by 1960's technology and predictable writing, but there were a lot sillier spells cast than this. Here we are talking about supernatural beings, angels and devils, anything is possible. An omen is a warning of good or evil; so an omen could indicate that magic has been done, couldn't it?
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
Simple … In order to believe in something, you need a reliable source. When your source verifies something, you believe in it and when that source denies something, you reject it. What would be a better source than God Himself ?
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
^ not if the source is part of a circular logic. Then it is just comical.
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
I fail to see the ‘circularity’ in that logic … unless … hold on … let me spin around a few times and make myself dizzy.
Ohhhh … I see what you mean now.
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
When the source says that people can cast spells, then the genie is out of the bottle and anything is possible. Since the source isn't an interactive, up-to-date account of what magic is happening on any given day with any given person, how are we supposed to know what is a spell and what isn't?
For isntance, you may be under the same type spell that Endora cast on Darrin in a 1968 episode which made him maniacally vain. Perhaps you aren't the 'hunk' you are made to believe.
Re: Breaking Glass-Bad Omen?
lol … ok ![]()
