Branded versus non-branded

I was in a rush at the supermarket and ended up buying the supermarket brand of certain personal consumable items. I only realized I had made a mistake once I was home and had already opened the packaging.

In most cases, supermarket branded or generic goods are cheaper to purchase and it’s a great way to save some money - but there are certain things that I will spend the extra pennies on so that I can buy the branded version since I find the product is better in quality.

So how many of you buy branded items? Or do you prefer to save some money and get the generic brand product? What are your MUST HAVES for branded items?

For me, I will only get:

Coca-Cola (generic brand is just yuck)
Soap (Dove)
Shampoos (TIGI Bedhead)

Re: Branded versus non-branded

^ there are however instances where it's just a difference in packaging. A good example would be Kellog's. However, the name brands do not let the value brands indicate that on their packaging as per the agreement.

Re: Branded versus non-branded

^ True. But there are certain goods where the taste (if it's a food product) or the quality of the product is discernably different.

Personally, I'm not hung up on branded goods - but there are certain things that I can't buy generic brands in - you can feel the difference.

I think there's validity in the Urdu saying:
Sasta roy'ay baar baar
Mehnga roy'ay aik baar

Re: Branded versus non-branded

ive gone cheap on toilet roll. shy away

Re: Branded versus non-branded

Yep, I agree with Sehrysh certain things I will make sure to buy branded versions of and there is clearly a difference in quality. Although at the moment I can only think of toilet paper.

Re: Branded versus non-branded

Ketchup!

Re: Branded versus non-branded

Kraft cheese tastes so much better than their generic counterparts.

Skincare products - no generics will do

Re: Branded versus non-branded

ok ! i have this question about kraft cheese , someone told me that it contains enzymes which are made from non halal process any helpful information is appreciated .

Re: Branded versus non-branded

i never ever buy a generic product. its always brand name things...it gives me peace of mind and less to worry. i know what i'm buying. its worth it!

Re: Branded versus non-branded

My husband bought the store brand for paper towels. :smack: Such a mistake and a waste. Even several paper towels are useless. I’m still trying to work my way through the huge pack, so I can go back to the good stuff. For stuff you really need to work well, stick to the branded.

It reminds me of the episode of* Everybody Loves Raymond* where Ray does the groceries and thinks he has been so clever about saving money, but others do not agree, much to his disappointment.

Re: Branded versus non-branded

oh but I discovered our grocery brand cheddar block is DELICIOUS!

Re: Branded versus non-branded

You have to know who is actually manufacturing the stuff, many times the manufacturers are the same. Private labels as they are called in US have made a serious dent in the performance of branded Consumer Packaged Goods, from foods to household supplies. I dont particularly care about private label vs P&G or

background of this info- 5+ years experience in CPG industry with clients like unilever, P&G, Colgate-Palmolive, SCJohnson, etc as well as retailers like safeway, walmart, etc

Re: Branded versus non-branded

For nonbranded things I’m okay with bottled water, otc medicines (I think Rx meds too? :konfused: ), yogurt, is milk non-branded?, frozen/canned veggies, canned tomato products, cereal if/when i do eat it, sometimes cookies/crackers etc, paper goods like paper plates, plastic cutlery, etc.

On occasion I have bought cold cuts/meat that are teh store brand/not branded.

Branded–toilet paper, tissue paper, soda, cheese…

Re: Branded versus non-branded

I once bought store brand Paper Towels to save few bucks. I had to use it all to wipe my tears after listening to every tana of my wife. Every time she used the paper towel some pearls of wisdom came my way :)

There are few things that we always stick to brand with such as

Paper Towels
Toilet Paper
Hand Soap
Dish washing Soap
Detergent
Dairy Products
Cereals
Kids snacks
etc

and there are some where we dont mind saving some bucks such as

Paper products
Cleaners, bleach etc (except for easy off)
Garbage bags
Frozen veggies
etc
