I cannot talk from experience as yet, but my two cents anyway:
Mom always made us wear mothercare when we were kids, but I never came to know that until now when I have to shop for mine and she told me she did it with us when we were kids. And well now it doesnt even matter what we wore in childhood. So I dont think your kid will be brand conscious UNLESS you yourself make him so by mentioning it in front of him every now and then. Kids of today are very sharp and quick to pick. If you mention the brand story in front of him every now and then, he will definitely get it into his mind. If you dont want him to be a brand conscious, dont be the one yourself, in the very first place. Your intent behind going for brands is the durability and NOT the pretense. So I dont think he will be brand conscious either :)
^me too mirage…i was a kind of kid who’s never very observant n not conscious at all about my wardrobe…whatever ammi bought for me i wore with no nakhras…
but now i see my nieces(12 and 9 yr old)…they notice each n everthing their mom or me(aunt) is wearing…they listen to our conversations of designer lawnprints…we try our best to avoid infront of them…but it cant be done if you go for shopping for example so where to keep them busy?they should be with us all the time…
now that i have my baby…i think more n more about it…
waisay boys doesnt get much brand conscious compared to girls i guess but still :halo:
also i would never like if my baby say to his friends n cousins “oh i wear this-brand only…idhar udhar k nai:snooty:”
I do go for branded goods where it makes sense. But what I also try to make clear to my kids is: We are not buying this, because it's brand XYZ, but because it's a good quality product or whatever the actual reason for buying it, is. If I have a no-name alternative that provides a similar quality I'd go for that, even though Alhamdulillah I could afford the branded version too.
Lol you forgot that those are girls, (always more conscious about fashion and everything) and you are talking about your boy! boys/men dont bother brands as much as women do. Also, the key again is not to talk so much about it or anything that may get into the head of the kids. you know what I mean
My kids wear very simple and rather cheap clothing...I wouldn't call it bad quality as long as they're 100% cotton. Sainsbury's TU has very good stuff at reasonable prices. I buy them expensive stuff only on eids.
I don't want them to look poor or ungroomed but at the same time don't want them to be involved in vanity too much....I think I'd do the same with my daughter/s. I myself have changed my attitude towards brands and spending.
I do buy branded clothes for my baby but at the same time he wears hand me downs too.. see the balance? :D
and when I say I buy branded clothes, I only mean Gap, gymboree, childrens place etc and not the very high tech ones that I probably dont even know about or will cost an arm and leg for one piece! I also shop with coupons and on sales to save a bit and never had any issues! I dont mind taking a bit worn clothes from my friends and family but tahts where i draw the line.. I dont buy used clothing or compromise on quality for cheap pieces!
I do this too. I don’t think any of these stores are expensive. Children’s place and Carter are pretty cheap, and I use as many coupons as I can use. I also shop from Walmart and target. I think at the age my son is, expensive branded clothes make no sense. He is growing up too fast..
I can’t justify buying my toddler overly expensive clothes. I do shop at babyGap and babyZara for special occasions or when I find something good on sale, but I can’t see myself paying full price at those stores for a kid who’ll only wear it twice.
I bought tons of stuff from Janie and Jack when she was an infant and she only wore those things once!!! (my fault I know) and on top of that one of the dresses shrunk in the drier so I can’t even hand it down to anyone
For my nephews (and InshAllah when I have my own), I shop off season for them. I dont think kids care that they are wearing last years clothing this year. So in January/February when all the winter clothes are going on major sale, I buy brand name stuff for them that will fit them next winter. You get the really good quality stuff at about 75% off. And the same goes for summer clothes, I buy them in September when they are marked down to clearance. And its even better to get them at the outlets.
With lots of research, reading books, observation, interviews and focus group discussions, I concluded with the factors mentioned above. It is not the kids, but the parents that are more brand conscious, however, kids from 2-8 can be, and are made to be brand aware. Maybe not in terms of clothing, but for toys, games, fast food...definitely. And all that comes from television and cartoons etc...
The only way you can not make them brand conscious is by not being all brand brand brand yourself...which means, get expensive stuff and branded stuff on sales, but also get cheaper stuff ...keep a mid point :) Children are not really interested in what brand of clothing they wear, however, they have become pretty aware when it comes to branded games and toys...they want what they see, and if they idealize or relate to an icon or an ad on tv, they'd want that too...
^wonderful!
i havent even thought about games n toys.....thankyou for reminding us.....ofcourse if we are not brand conscious our kids will not be inshaAllah....
i have not bought much toys for him too lol because he's more interested in playing with bartan n dabbay etc.....
I guess one thing is being quality conscious and wanting to see your child in the best acc. to you and your means. Another thing is being brand conscious, and by that I mean parents who will just buy anything, because it has a sticker on it. Basically each to their own, but I dont understand the obsession of the later once.
My SIL buys a mix of clothes. They can be branded like Tommy Hilfiger or something else or they can be from , me-to-you, babysam, name it, H&M and Next. I think she mostly shops in Next, though. I personally dont care as long as they look proper and cute :D, but I know when she had her first one, and I think this probably goes for a lot of first-time mums, she was like "oh I will never buy clothes from H&M" because she didnt find it to be as good quality as the rest... Now she only complains about how it all is so expensive, even H&M, I suppose for 5 kids it can all be that. lol
For me quality is really important. I love to buy clothes from Zara, Benneton and sometimes H&M. I always buy during sale at the Benneton shop. Last year I bought a wintercoat for her from 65 to 32,50 Euro. And now she wears it. This winter I'll buy stuff for her for next year. Without any sale I can find a beautiful dress at Zara for about 25 Euro. So I'm okay with it. Tommy hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Burberry etc etc are way too expensive coz she grows sooo fast.
The best quality that will go through tons of washes and still look great is mexx. I also like Gymboree and Marks and Spencer's. I also shopped at monsoon and bonpoint ( only at when there was a major sale like 50 - 70% off)
