If it’s too late then you’re screwed. You HAVE to catch the problem early on while your brain can still dominate your actions.
You must always be a realist, never a romanticist. The moment you think you might start liking someone you must immediately stop and execute a feasibility analysis. If the probability of things not being able to work out is anything other than low, you must cut all contact with the person until things have cooled down.
