I think the “I would like to stay friends” line would hurt anyone (boy or girl) if the individual was truly interested.
But it’s better to be honest as opposed to pursuing the guy only for his wealth when you don’t have any genuine romantic interest. Yes, ignorance can be bliss, but it wouldn’t be fair.
