Is the boy’s name *Samuel * a Muslim name? Does anyone know where the name originates from?
Also what spellings do you prefer for the boy’s name Yusuf, Yousaf, Yusaf etc?

samuel is a hebrew name i believe. The closest to it in islam, maybe the equivalent not sure, is sami ullah :-)

Not a Muslim name. But a name doesn't make a person a Muslim. Or a Christian or a Jew for that matter.

The boy’s name Samuel *\s(a)-**muel* is pronounced SAM-yoo-el. It is of Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Samuel is “God heard”. Also possibly as “requested of God”, “God’s heart” or “God’s name”. Biblical: the prophet and judge who anointed Saul and David as kings of Israel.
For Yousuf, I prefer just that- You-suf.

actually i was wondering why is the name so rare among muslims. after all gabriel was the archangel who revealed the Quran to the Prophet.

^ its Jibreel in Arabic, Gabriel in English. just like Mekyle/Michael, Yaqub/Jacob, etc. Personally, we like the sound of Gabriel better than Jibreel.

I really like the name Samuel but everyone is against it saying its Jewish etc. Its so hard deciding on names!

As for the Jewish name, at least they're Ehl-e-kitaab. I say if the meaning is solid and you love the name, go for it.
