Bhubaneswar, Feb. 9: A man gouged out the eyes of a five-year-old boy and offered them to Goddess Durga before killing him.
According to police reports, Gannath Dehury of Sargigarh village, in Orissa’s Sudergarh district, picked up Sontosh when he was playing on the village road on Sunday night by promising him chocolates. He took him to a canal outside the village, stripped him, chopped off his ring finger and gouged out his eyes.
As the profusely bleeding boy fainted after some time, Dehury stabbed him to death and left the body in a deserted field.
At the time of the killing, most of the villagers had been watching a cultural programme. Dehury told the police that Goddess Durga had appeared in his dreams and asked him to sacrifice a minor if he wanted his problems to go away.
The officials said Dehury "offered" the finger and eyes to the water in the canal, returned home and performed occult rituals in the nude.
The boy’s family complained to the police when he didn’t return home. The dead body was recovered on Monday evening after some people suspected Dehury and made him confess to the crime. He was later handed over to police officials, who have seized the knife used to kill the child.
In yet another incident of occult practice, a three-year-old child was rescued by villagers on Tuesday just before being sacrificed by her own uncle. According to the police, Jadab Suna kidnapped the girl from near her home in eastern Orissa’s Paurajhar village and took her to a graveyard. His plan was to sacrifice her as part of a ritual that he thought would please the gods. But the little girl’s screams were heard by villagers nearby who stopped Jadab and then rushed the girl, in critical condition, to her family. Angry villagers have handed over Jadab to the police and are demanding harsh punishment to deter others.
The administration in Orissa has been fighting the practice of tantric rituals involving human sacrifice for a long time. Every year, the police records several incidents of human sacrifice, or attempted sacrifice, especially in the tribal belts.
