Boy, 10, detained in US rape case

**A judge in the US city of Phoenix, Arizona, has ordered the detention of a boy aged 10, accused with three other boys of raping an eight-year-old girl.**The boy wept in court as the judge said he would be held while the case was being investigated.

The four Liberian immigrant boys, aged nine to 14, have been accused of kidnapping and sexual assault in July.

Police have said that the oldest boy will be tried as an adult. The three others are charged as juveniles.

Judge Aimee Anderson told the 10-year-old boy on Wednesday she was proud of him for getting an award at the detention facility where he has been held.

Chewing gum

The girl is now under the care of the Arizona Child Protective Service after her parents said she had shamed them and they did not want her back.

The police have said no charges will be filed against the parents.

Media reports say the girl was lured by the four boys into a shed on 16 July with promises of chewing gum.

There, they allegedly held her down and took turns assaulting her for 10 to 15 minutes, before her screams alerted officers nearby.

The case has sparked outrage across the US and even drawn condemnation from Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, an outspoken anti-rape campaigner.
