A serial killer who was not born, but made.
I read that statment in one of movies reviews:hoonh:
How much do you agree/disagree with that? and WHY ?
I will keep my view for now and see what do you guys think.

Everybody is a born killer. It is our culture and values that prevent us from killing. Ofcourse, genetics makes some people more prone to killing than others.
Think about soldiers and war. Soldiers have no problem killing others. Others in war have no problem in beheading people.

I believe circumstances surely change one's attitude or even the entire personality. If we say a serial killer was born, then the child of every serial killer should be a serial killer as well. but thats not the case. so this statement that "A serial killer who was not born, but made" holds true.

Dont agree. genetics , absolutely not. whats the percentage of children from army parents join army ? soldiers are trained in such a way that when time comes, they dont get scared of killing the enemy at war.

I believe destruction is an inherent trait in man, so the breeding grounds for crime are already there. Take away law and order, rules and regulations and see how man degenerates. It’s the values instilled in us and our circumstances that determine whether we subdue this inherent destructiveness or allow it to control us and that is what ultimately makes one a criminal.

This question is about heredity vs environment and is a question that has been pondered for centuries. Certainly, BOTH play a role. But how much "blame" to assign to either one? That has not yet been answered, theres just too much mystery left as to the workings of the human brain.

This subject has been studied and you can find research papers on google. In a nutshell, a “serial killer” has experienced an extremely traumatic childhood and has not received the nurturing love and care of their parents (who may actually be present in their lives). There are other factors as well that “make” a “serial killer”. Google.
Children are born blank slates unless mother has experimented with drugs/smoking during pregnany which could affect their bio-chemical makeup.
Children born with psychologically impaired personalities show those traits early on and can be treated (unlike a “serial killer” whose predilections remains hidden from society).

LI, you made some valid points but the one about children being blank slates isnt quite true. There are so very many psychological maladies that are/can be inherited that can contribute to criminal behavior no matter WHAT the parents are like. There are also serial killers who were subjected to nothing but the most loving of homes. There are vast numbers of people who had the worst of childhoods but became the best of model citizens. And people who had the best of childhoods but became career criminals. There are too many countless of these cases to determine for fact how much environment vs how much heredity plays a role.

Mama ji, you post makes a stronger case for "made" theory than "born" theory. :)
Regarding children with psychological maladies, like I said, they can be detected early on and treated.

LI...not sure about what you're saying.....I mean, schizophrenia typically rears its ugly head in the late teen years. And at least a good number of people suffering from it DO NOT seek the help they need....parents dont know that their children of 19 are "hearing voices". There are serial killers (sorry I dont remember which ones) who had very loving homes and the parents were totally shocked that their offspring turned out to be what they are. Maybe not the majority but enough of them to make this whole argument of heredity vs environment one which has yet to be answered.

psycopaths and serial killers are born, not made.
other criminals might be made. can't say much about them.
