Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

Hyprcacy of religous fantics is mind bogling though… Do you know that while the new fangled Taliban are busy banning things like girls going to school along with Alcohol, they seem to have no problem with the drug trade in FATA!

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

alcohol is easily available all across pakistan.murree brewery is a company which makes alcoholic beverages for non-muslims in pakistan but the majority of their buyers are muslims...they have shops all across Pakistan where they bootleg liquor to muslims...the police is happy making money with them and letting them booteg.its a good idea to avoid the desi sharab though cause sometimes its found to be poisonous.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

There are also a good number "private" retailers who are more then willing to supply it to the right person...
Christians I have heard, are also making a killing reselling in some parts...

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

At least something is there in the consumer products for which the price has not been hiked for last 10 years or so.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

Did you know poppy production was minimal when??

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

In my few months spent in Peshawar I found it to be a true democracy in the pre-MMA era. People could buy and sell whatever they wanted be it a thaan of cloth, Russian made Airconditioners, sex magazines, weapons, drugs, sharaab, or chapli kabaab. The feeling was of open-ness and entrprenurial trade.

It has been a while since I last visited. Looks like no matter what kind of rules and restrictions you put on the people will do as they please. That in essence is a true democracy.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

the best way forward for pakistan is to maintain the ban on alcohol and drugs. also make progress to offer ALL children compulsory education. banning of girls from schools is not something we'll have to worry about. everyone agrees on the equality issue. banning girls would be as ridiculous as lifting ban on sharraab

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

The aristocratic Britons do, speaks volumes about the company I kept in UK.:toffee nose icon:

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

Well Said, but remember NO Thanks to MMA!!!

It is an intrinsic part of the peshawari society, every one is allowed to do whatever they want to, only on a hush hush basis and the people are also responsible enough to understand their parameters.

PS: Please don’t put chapli kababs in that list, Chapli Kababs are a tradition, probably a religion, for the people of Peshawar , we love it with a little Narinj over it

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

its the whole idea of eating with a fork and knife and not w/ u rhands that's "western"..

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

yes, I very fondly remember the chapli (saplai as they called it) kabab from Nothia. I think it was fareed's. Then you have those in the old baaRRa bazaar. Those kababs from fareed Kababi would melt in your mouth as if you were eating buttered lobster. Tandoori roti and piyaaz timaater salaad. And then top it off with a green qehva.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

No Sara, not really..

I cant remember the reference, it was on Discovery ( I think). The whole concept of eating with a fork and a knife came from a Muslim country in the time of Khilafat.
Just like coffee, which was first sold commercially in turkey and then found its way to the west?

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

Kya yaad dila dee, but FG, Nothia for chapli kebabs, I think Not, I havent given it a try, the best in peshawar with eggs and * Nalee* (Marrow) you will find at “Bakshi Pull”

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

Hmm really?
I thought people eat mostly with their hands because it's sunnah.. (i'm not positive, someone correct me)...also its kinda hard to eat roti with a fork n knife.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

I am also not a 100 % sure , thats why I would ask someone to enlighten us both, but I am quite sure I heard this, by the way Sara not all the muslim world eats the tandoori roti.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

I just wanted to share this also, The Peshawari restaurant owners and eateries are much more accommodating when it comes to drinking, after 11 o clock, that is, if they are open, and you land at their door step, they are like......
"Yes Khan, right now, we will do it for you." ok they have these smirks on their faces but they are much more obedient and hospitable.

Recently I had just 3 beers and landed at "Pot Belly(Defence) Lahore", and after the casual chit chat the damn!!! waiter asks me.
* Sir jee! Aaj tou app mood mai lagtay hain*

I was really crossed at that point, but as you all know me , I overlooked his “ Smart Alec” remark.

Re: Bootlegging alive and kicking in Peshawar.

I found something on fork...

Here is an excerpt...
The fork was introduced in the Middle East before the year 1000. The earliest forks usually had only two tines, but those with numerous tines caught on quickly.
