BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

why Desi people religiously follow this ‘BooRhi ghoRi laal lagham’ concept in almost all fields.

One can not pursue education beyond a certain age. There are time-limits for suitable age for being married (especially in case of girls). Even having children after a certain age is considered taboo.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

Well maybe this is a part of discriminatory behaviours which we grow up with in a male dominated society.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

I think this is beyond male dominated society as males also faces such discrimination in certain cases

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

How people react to see a couple having a baby ( when they are in their late 40’s / earlier 50s having grandchildren)? One of my sister’s friend ( who herself is married with 2 children) hide the news of her parents having baby with the comments: ab kiya batati, hamen to sharam aa rahi thi :smack:

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

I’m gonna go things acc to wht suits me…leaving these concepts behind.Wish me luck

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

All the best :k:

But again we have to decide, what is socially acceptable. Hum rehte apne gharon main hain, lekin jis hawa main hum saans lete hain wo bahir se aati hai :halo:

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

Well well…one has to take the initiative when other lives are dependent on one.
and then again..there’s a limit to things you can take.At some point in time, you say its enough.
And then again it will be tougher for ppl with a big social circle.I dont have a v big social circle.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

you are right that one has to take stand against such concepts, but this requires courage. courage to sacrifice and face criticism as well. Because people are 'lakeer ke faqeer' and they want others to follow that lakeer

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

I faced criticism when I worked…but I knew my purpose was far greater than the hurt i got from constant criticisms.
Yes it hurts and at times you slip into depression. But, my purpose gives me the courage to do what i’m doing and wht i intend to do.
Some of my GS frnds give me the moral support I need.I have a few v good frnds :alhamd:

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

yes, sometimes your company from different cultures give you valuable advice, which can’t be given by / expected from people around you.

Do you think this age-bound concept of doing certain things also exist in Arab society?

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

oh i'm sure arabs must have age bound concepts too...but i havent come across it yet.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

Hav eyou seen an Arab lady giving birth to children after being granny? How it is perceived in Arab society?

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

its v normal to have kids after being granny in arabs.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

but Desi feel embarrassed to face such situation

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

Even divorce was a taboo among desis till a few yrs back...but its not a taboo among arabs.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

Ok there was this equation popular amongst Arabs for age of wife. Husband's age / 2 + 7. Meaning, if Husband is 30, his wife should not be above 22. Is this still followed. Though, if we look at history, Arabs did married elder ladies, which is not common in Desis and their history.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

Ohh..i never heard of tht formula. Then again I know few arabs,so I can only talk abt them. The city where I live...few of the most well educated arabs reside here.
Marrying elder women isnt v common but it exists.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

The old age marriage or having a child in older age are taboos but I thought this was to do with scenario when older women try to dress up like young girls or do heavy odd looking make up.

Re: BooRhi ghoRi Laal Lagham!

yes, the muhawra is normally used in this context, but the concept is same. After a certain age, you lose privilege of doing something.
