I thought it’d be interesting to learn what books (aside from Quran) the members here are reading these days. Perhaps we could all share a bit of synopsis, which could motivate others to read it if it’s of interest to them.
Since I’ve been experiencing a bad patch, I motivated myself to start reading tafsir again and sort of another book on the side.
Tafsir ibn Kathir - I’m sure most of us would be familiar with it. Whenever I’m in the mood to read and can’t think of anything in particular that is on my mind, I try to read Tafsir ibn Kathir, as I find it an excellent source of learning more about Quran.
Diseases of the hearts and their cures (by Ibn Taymiyyah) - I recall having read this book many years ago. Given that I’ve been going through a bad patch, I thought I’d read it again. I’ve barely started it. Therefore, based on memory I reckon this book talks about various diseases of the hearts and their cures in the light of Quran and ahadith. I believe it usually states the relevant verses from the Quran and lists the ahadith that are pertinent to the topic.
p.s. I hope we can keep this thread clean and refrain from any unnecessary bashing, insha’Allah. I’m hoping we could sort of come up with a decent list that we could pick and choose from for reading than ridiculing each other.
I have few of the Islamic books. One of the them is called "Sayings of the Prophet", which is amazing. The next one is "Towards the Understand of Islam" from Ibn Taymiyyah. But one thing to tell you, Quran is enough to have knowledge.
for those interested in learning about the prophet's life..
you should check out the book called 'Muhammad' by Yahiya Emerick.
i finished reading it a while back..and it's quite interesting. it tells the story of the prophet from before he was born, until his death.
it's good, i really liked it because it was simple to understand..and was sort of a refresher for me.
I recently read Atlas of Prophets may peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him, biography.
This book is the first of its own kind, where it pictorially shows a complete geographical boundaries. How the message was propogated. The land travelled by Ibrahim peace be upon him.
Its an excellent book.
Al-Farooq The life of Omar the Great (second Caliph of Islam) written by Professor Shibli Nu'umani (shams-ul-Ulama) Translated into English by Maulana Zafar Ali Khan.
You can't put it down. it has breath taking detail.
The bo0k that iw ould recommend is not the one i am currently reading but have done reading a few weeks back..it's THE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO ISLAM...cannot remember the author's and publisher's name but will post it up at my earliest convenience...It's a go0d one and i seriously recommend this bo0k to all the friends. Covers everything in a reasonable detail, from offering namaz to the rights and duties to wife.
Book on Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) biography reminds me of Ar-Raheeq al-Makhtum - The Sealed Nectar (by Safi-ur Rahman al-Mubarakpuri). It's another great book that I've read in the past. I believe I read another book on seerah or read tidbits, but this book summed it up really nicely. I'd definitely recommend this one.
yo_wasim, is Atlas of Prophets (AS) by Dar-us-Salaam publisher? I recall coming across such a title, but I've got tafsir to finish and review the books I already got before I go buy another one. However, it sounds as though it is certainly one of the books I'd love to read one day.
Btw... would it be possible to post the pictures of book covers? It sometimes helps with the purchase or jogging the memory in case it's been read in the past.
It is a travelouge but the difference that the only emphasis of writer is on the current status of muslims, thier size and lifestyle and their history in particular countries. This is very interesting, because he has travelled many countries and some of them are not very well known but I got to know a great deal about them due to this book.
I had no idea that Barbados ( part of west indies) has a strong and proactive muslim comunity. Same way I never heard about Re-union ( small island near madagaskar) , but according to him it is doing the fine job of providing/ translating Islamic books in French :k: Although the island is a tourist resort but muslims there (who are french) very actively follow islamic traditions and teachings
Oh btw, it is in urdu. not sure about the translation
reading books is great idea and we definitely should but i perfer reciting Quran and reading translation and its tafseer. I would suggest everyone to read Surah Al-Waqi'a's translation over and over again. Beside quranic tafseer, i spent most of my time on islam-qa site. That's pretty much form me
I have seen this before however I’m sure you can find something on everybody in our history. The difference of opnion can be a blessing sometimes as long as it is not in a matter of aqidah. However there was reason why I wrote that Albani’s book is informative, because I am aware of these refutations or rebukes. Information can lead to different opnions based on ones interpreation and knowledge of other sources. However nice of you to point to the link, it is also informative. Having that is no less than service when you have the book as well.
Moreover I feel
Tafsir Ibn Kathir, covers most of Its
Sihah Sitta,(6 authentic hadith)
Fiqh us sunnah, If someone can read this its the best only with regards to hadith. Its all in one 6 sihah sitta and 4 Madhabs in one.
Yes if you have doubts please do refer to any scholar or what Allaah ka Banda says www.islam-qa.com,
otherone is www.islamweb.net.
Islam-qa is more comprehensive compared to latter.
Allaah knows the best.
I know why the call them Sihah Sitta and it's quite common among muslims to say and hear this term. But brother wasim, not all of the 7 hadith books have all authenticated ahadith. Only Bkahari and Muslims are the most authenticated therefore, we should limit the words "sahih" to these two. Rest of the 5 do have hassan and sahih ahadith but they have lots of daeef ahadith as well.
by th way brother wasim, you can address me by "salman" Jazak Allah
by th way brother wasim, you can address me by "salman" Jazak Allah
Agree wiht you salman, only two are most authenticated. Scholars do have difference between Bukhari and Muslim. Now why the scholars call as Sihah sitta you can rephrase this as 6 Major collections of Hadith (though only Bukhari and Muslim are authentic), and moreover why all this are added in the 6 major hadith though it has hasan and daeef hadith, this actually also made me think.
Like Sunan Tirmidhi we have more of Hasan and Daeef, hadith but when I looked at the explanation it says for every Hadith of Sunan Tirmidhi he comprehensively explains why this is hasan, hasan gharib, daeef. Just an explanation, Salman
I agree wiht you completely as nothing can be as authentic as Bukhari and Muslim.
JazakAllah Khair.
Overall now i am reading the book Ulum Al Quran - Science of Quran. Though they are a couple of mistakes but provides a detailed report of Revelation. The difference between Makkaah and Madani surahs. How can we go ahead with dawah wrt Makkah and Madani surahs.
