Books, scrolls and everyday life

how much philosophy works in real life. how many times have u solved ur personal and prefessional issues with a touch of Jibran or gems from bushido .. just wondering if ancient wisdom still rocks..

I wouldn't have minded leaving this thread in General, but I know how desperate Nescio bibi is to kick life into Science and Philosophy forum, so I've moved it there.

philosophy only confuses things and hardly ever provides solutions to anything PRACTICAL....
it can, at best, make u mentally feel better and convinced....

If you have read Shafiq-ur-Rehman, he has written a very funny piece on this topic, titled "Farmatey Hain". He is extremely funny. I would agree with him that it appears as if these famous people had nothing better to do than to keep on making statements that would eventually be quoted by all and sundry to support their arguments.

Also, you would find a lot of contradictory statements on the same topic. For example, one of them would say: Khamoshi Jahil ka parda hai. Whereas, at the same time, another sage would be saying: Kasrat-e-kalam jahalat ki illamat hai. I remembered this one because they used to write a new so-called inspirational quote each week on our school's notice board. so one week they wrote the first one, and on the other the second one. Left us a bit confused, like which one should we really believe in. And some of the books said in books seem very impressive, but I bet they aren't practicable, in some cases not even reasonable.

I’d agree with armg, it does satisfy you personally sometimes. I guess logic hasn't got much to do with philosophy so you can tackle almost anything with abstract reasons.

mod-edit

I dont use ancient 'wisdom' for help.

Philosophy is not really a set of rules to solve anything. If it does in some people's case then good for them.

It is also not made up of some intricate notions of abstraction and reason. We all pretty much "philosophize" things in daily life without being conscious of it. So it's pretty much part of real life when needed.
