Does anyone know of any books relating to independance?
A friend of mine lent me a book called ‘Azadi’ by Chaman Lal.. it didnt occur to me in the beginning that the book was sort of against Muslims… not that i mind.. its nice to read some propaganda opposing pakistan…
does anyone know of any good fiction books that are relatively similar but maybe more about what the muslims went through??
well Sadzz if ure a beginer with pakistani and partition historu i would strongly reccomend that you dont read any hindu authors works for now. theres so much prpaganda out there that its hard even for the people who were alive at the time to tell facts from fiction at times. authors like khushwant singh are although neutral for the most part for which we must be grateful.
now to some good tiles, look around for this book which is translated into english from the fictional works of 2 sisters hajra masrroor and khadija mastoor. they are very famous in urdu literature, and wrote about waht all happened with familis at the time of the great divide.its publisged by oup but i cant recall thjr name.
if you want real history look into Jinnah of Pakistan by stanley wolpert.
If you can read Urdu, try reading a short story by Saadat Hassan Minto Called "Toba Tek Singh". It was also dramatied a few years back. It talks about the partition from the eyes of 2 madmen in a sanitarium.
.. actually i do know the history or it all.. and ive watched a lot of propaganda... (as in paki dramaz and indian movies) but just wanted a good book as well... my urdu isnt superb.. so i was looking for something in english :)
THERE are many good books
there are so many short stories based on the subject by sadat hasan manto which have been translated into english
there is freedom at midnight which is a good balanced version of the events of 1947
then there is weary generations by some pakistani author which is fiction work but done with lot of authentic research
