Amber, apparently most of the classical novels I liked, I was really looking forward to them getting made into a movie, and the results have been so disappointing that I am not sure I want any more of my favorite novels getting made into movies.
Plus I think the imagination which forms in one's mind while reading the novel, becomes impossible for the director to portray on the screen. Simply cuz everyone has a different imagination and no two match with each other.
It's very often that readers of a particular book get very very disappointed when they watch the movie based on that book.
Well, i usually like reading the book/novel first (dun't usually do so now..)then watching its movie. Though, just this summer, i watched I Dreamed of Africa right. &....i really liked the movie...so i'm thinking, the book must be amazing; if i could just get the energy & patience to read it....
This past year i read the Power of One (quite a widely heard novel) & i loved it so much....reminded me of so many childhood memories. I know i got so disappointed like anything while watching its movie......didn't even bother wtaching the last hour & just returned it to the store cuz i knew it was a waste of time to watch the remaining.
Btw, the bbc version of Jane Eyre, & Zefferelli's (sp?) version of Hamlet -- with Mel Gibson -- was quite accurate.
Bothers me so much when the movie plot differs from the book.
ya i agree with you mostly that the adaption from book to screenplay sometimes does not do justice to the book..
like with all the stephen king books i’ve read and their movies.. i was disappointed the most with IT and pet cemetary…or i was very disappointed with watching communion..based on the whitley strieber book and the vc andrews flowers in the attic..
did u guys get to see the movie on tv. tenth kingdom.. btw; i think that would have made an awesome book.
with a suitable boy, the book is so descriptive that ya your imagination does take you away to that part of time and what it would be like.. its a matter finding the right director/producer/screenplay adapter working in conjunction with the author to do it justice.. steven spielberg i’m sure could do an awesome job..
even michael ondaatjees book..the english patient.. it was adapted beautifully for the big screen.. i mean it did get 12 academy award nominations and won 9 of them
You know most of me, but not all of me Things that I have done are not suppose to be I’m a sinner of my sins A prisoner of my prisons I love God, but I dont think God loves me For that i want to know If I die will you cry for me
yeah, most book conversions are unable to either grasp or display the atmosphere created by the book.
Sometimes, even the Author working with the crew for 'technical' support can't seem to make the transition as seamless as he/she or the audience would like. I think the 92 version of Wuthering Heights was alright though.
As for Stephen King, no movie could ever perfectly create the eerieness he pens.
Just the other day I watched the movie Cider House Rules. I have not read the novel, and am not sure if I would but I could still get a sense how well the movie was made given the book's class.
The other movie that I recently watched after reading the book was The Great Gatsby. The movie was made back in 70's with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. One thing that struck me was that the movie follows the book very closely. So closely that almost all of the dialogues and scene sequences are the same as the book. There are only a couple of omissions scene-wise. I think idea behind making The Great Gatsby was not to adopt the plot and storyline but rather recompose the whole book visually in the form of a movie.
I don't know if there is already a movie on it, but I think Maxim Gorky's 'Mother' will make a good movie. But they definitely need some really good director to handle the main character development and different aspects of emotional struggle and common but somwhat involutary endurances during the Russian Revolutionary era.
roman.. i had to read the great gatsby in english class and had to watch the movie too.. but i don't remember much about it since it was a long time ago.. i guess i didn't like the book or something..
although i haven't read the book.. one of my all time fav movies is shogun.. i think they did an excellent job with shogun the movie
The first movie ever i remember watching that was based on a novel was 'A Tale of Two Cities' by Charles Dickens
The book is my favourite among all and i remember watching the movie five, six times .....
Later when i tried the same with Pride and Prejudice however i was disappointed
Then when they turned my fav author John Grisham's books into movies i swear i could kill whoever manipulated the story line
I was so excited when 'The Firm' came out but my reaction was 'HuH'
same with Pelican Brief and The Client
Lets just say that i think its hard for the film makers to put a 400- 500 pages of a good story into a 2 hour film
the best screen plays for books I have read are,
1)Pride and prejudice (A&E and BBC production) (excellent must see)
2) Dr Zhivago (better than the book!)
3)Tess
4)Gone With The Wind
I would certainly like
Return of the Native (Thomas Hardy)
Crime and Punishment (Dostovisky)
The Earth (Zola)
Better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness.
As I am really into horror movies, I was really looking forward to “The Exorcist”. The book was amazing and I thought the film would be just as good. But man was I badly disappointed.
However one film which was excellent I have to say was one of Stephen Kings novels “The Shining”, absolutely brill it was.
I had to read that novel my sophomore year in high school, and I will agree, Great Gatsby (the movie) does follow the novel closely. And it was that same Mia Farrow version. The director did a fine job in following Fitzgerald's plot. And this is not visible in majority of the cases. The only other place where the director could satisfy the imagination of the reader to some extent was the English version of Great Expectations. It was somewhat closer to the novel than most others.
Another movie that I liked (and yet again haven't read the novel) was 'World according to garp'. It's also based on a novel with the same title by John Irving. Definitely recommended.
