Books and their effect

Has a book ever had a deep impact on your thinking and concepts? I believe that a book has the capability of changing ones ideas and beliefs, much more than a T.V program can.
So, what kind of books do you like?
Has there ever been a book that has disgusted or amazed you?

Who says nothing is impossible? I’ve been doing nothing all my life!

Humsa,

The first ever booked that disgusted and amzed me at the same time was "The Hidden Face of Eve". It is by an Egyptian writer named Nawal El sadaawi, you may have heard of her.

In this book she describes the cruel practice of female circumcision in Egypt and many surrounding countries, in the name of Allah. These people actually believe it is in Islam, where as it is a pre islamic practice which they did not stop carryin out.

It is so embedded in their culture, just like arranged marriages in ours, that to this day they still do it

Not to go into too much detail, but they do this so that the girl does not feel sexual pleasure, as it is considered sinful. They are very young when it happens to them, around 5 or 6.

Even in England, a documentary was shown where a somalian muslim Doctor was carrying out female circumcisions in Manchester (Ilegally)!!!And charging hundreds for it

The feelings I had were of disbelief, total anger, and sympathy for the poor children who had to go through this practice.

It really made me reflect on my lifestyle and how it could have been much worse for me.

princess and princess sultana’s daughter’s (the sequel) by jean p. sasson.

both have had a lasting impact on my views on the relationship between muslim men and women…and of saudi arab.

A friend once recommended that I read a book...it has had a very long lasting impact on my life.

I think I even talked about it here on GupShup....perhaps I should do a search and bring the thread back.....

Book is called "Jonathan Livingston Seagull".
