Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

MUMBAI: Bookie Sonu Yogendra Jalan alias Malad has told the crime branch that he paid Rs 10 crore to a Sri Lankan cricket player for fixing a match. He also mentioned that some Indian cricketers were also involved in match fixing, sources said.

He along with Devendra Kothari alias Bhaiyyaji, were arrested by the city crime branch on Thursday. They are believed to be a part of a bigger international cricket betting racket, crime branch officials said.

The property cell of Mumbai crime branch on Thursday raided a building at Lokhandwala in Kandivli and busted a major cricket betting racket. Police arrested Kothari, Jalan and two others and seized two laptops, voice recorders, computers, 25 mobile phones and cash of Rs 5.18 lakh. All the accused were booked under prevention of gambling act and were remanded to police custody.

Sources said that Kothari and Sonu Jalan’s betting network, whose turn over is around Rs 500 crore a month, is controlled by a Pakistan-based gang belonging to Chhota Shakeel. Sonu Jalan was arrested last year from Andheri in another case of gambling by the Social Service branch. Kothari was also an accused in that case and was not traceable.

In the fresh case, Kothari and Jalan had clients and punters in Afghanistan, Pakistan, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. In India, the gang has their associates in Delhi, Kolkata, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana.

“We had information that the gang was accepting bets on the IPL matches. Based on the information, we have arrested them. The gang is well-organised with having all the betting assessment software with them which helps them in managing their betting business” said Deven Bharti, additional commissioner of police.

The gang also asked their member or associates to open an account with the official UK betting site Betfair and passed on the passwords to Sonu and Kothari, who accessed it, found out the rates and accepted the bets accordingly. One cannot place on line bets on Betfair in India as betting on sport is illegal here.

Sonu, while in custody, had earlier told the police that he had paid around Rs 1 crore to an IPS officer for not arresting him. But he was arrested. He had threatened to lodge a complaint with the state anti-corruption bureau, but went on the backfoot after another senior IPS officer intervened.

Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match - The Times of India

Shabbash, proud of you.

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

but sharabee, these news are published in times of india..so not exactly garbage press either....or is it?...i dont know Indian press so intimately.

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

^I never said its garbage press! All fixing claims should be seriously investigated. India is a bookie powerhouse!

I was referring waleeds usage of 'this gutter' to refer to IPL, India or whatever.

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

Most probably the IPL. :hoonh: Can’t say I disagree with him, IPL is just another way to send money from one hands to the next. Most of the matches run far too close, and well few can deny that India is not the bookie/gambling powerhouse of the world. South Africa come a distant second.

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

Check out the IPL thread. Most of us were complaining that

A T20 game with evenly matched sides is very often going to come close. The crazy amount of money being made by the players is actually a big motivator for them to not cheat for money. Having said that, I said it myself in my last post that India is bookie powerhouse and theres a good chance players are being approached quite often. It is not unlikely some may get involved at some time and as a fan I want every case to be seriously investigated, like they are doing with the other case.

Lets face it. The IPL haters here dont just hate it because it’s T20, overcommercialized etc etc.. the primary reason is how pakistani players have been treated by the IPL. And that’s fine.

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

10 crores? Nah - too small an amount. I don't believe this story.

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

may be some no name players like we never heard them.........

i can't see it happening with national team players

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

It’s not that, this game is being played at a much higher level. Bigger hands are running the show. The players are just pawns, it doesn’t matter if they make a crazy amount or not, and unless there is concrete proof I have no reasons to believe they are corrupted. I am talking about the whole show, the IPL itself, which is just a face for the powers (Indian underworld, rich elites, corporates and even small town crooks) to have their way.

Indian cricket is too big an elephant for the bad boys to miss out. Particularly if the show is all in-house, instead of international tours.

Well can’t speak for others, but I’m a cricketing purist. :hoonh: Never gave two hoots about the Twenty20 format, let alone the IPL. Or ICL before it. When Zee TV announced their plans of a domestic Twenty20 league after Indian team’s premature exit in 2007, I knew what was coming. Personally never cared enough to watch a full IPL match (just watched the highlights of Shoaib Akhtar’s fiery performance in his first match, that’s all).

And if I had my way Pakistani players would never have to the permission to play in IPL, or any other leagues. No point in them becoming pathetic and greedy mercenaries, and that too at the expense of the Pakistan National Team. Country first, last, and middle. Maybe a stint in the county season for younger players just to give them the polish. And PPL if it starts. But that’s it.

Twenty20 does nothing except create tulla players - like we don’t already have enough of them already. :snooty: Focus on tests and one-days, these are the two formats that what will always matter, the games of real champions. So yeah, like I said, I hope Pakistan NT regulars never get a chance to play IPL again, or any of those other stupid leagues that are popping up. Besides, too much cricket, is never good anyway.

The only Pakistan Twenty20 team that I will support would be the domestic champions for the Champions League. That’s all folks!

Re: Bookie claims he paid Sri Lanka cricketer Rs 10 crore to fix IPL match

Oh, and apologies for the double post, but really the falling standards of the game are a cause for concern. :bummer: They may not be evident for every one to see, and many would not care enough to see them in the first place, but from the age of Laras, Pollocks, Wasims, Waqars, Warnes, Imrans, Hadlees, de Silvas, Zaheers, Devs, to the pathetic duds of today like … oh, let’s leave the names this time round.

Just like in most other fields in life, there is a massive deterioration going one in cricket. Sad.
