I just came across this interview by Booker prize winner Indian Author and was stunned to hear what she has to say.
So why is she calling Indian economic success a big “Lie”?
Here is the summary of her interview:
*- Yes we have Worlds largest millionaires or billionaires, but we have 800 million people living on less than 0.30 Dollar a day
You have millions of displaced people
You have more poorest people in India than poor countries of Africa
Vast parts of the country are out of control of govt., they are deploying paramilitary forces everywhere, Govt. can’t even go to these territories
100s of people are being killed and its like a civil war there, so I can’t just keep on writing fiction*
Re: Booker prize winner Indian Arundhati Roy calls Indians economic success a lie
The one honest indian, unlike the ones we find here on boards. By design, India is eventually meant to disintegrate. There are just SO many different people, cultures etc that a homogenous existence is very unlikely especially since south asians are very angry and short tempered people. Huge separatist movements like the neaxalites are in full rage and are very likely to result in the disintegration of India. I can only hope that India disintegrates as soon as possible as this would relieve ALL of its neighbors from a lot of troubles e.g. china would sigh with relief since it won't have to continue stockpiling weapons due to a psychotic, war crazy neighbor, pakistan can be relieved that hindus are no longer creating trouble in parts of the country and so on.........

How will the disintegration of India benefit you, is beyond me. Look at your home and think about how can you keep it floating. How will you feel if some India talks about Pakistan in this way? And even if one does so, why should you stoop to that pathetic level? It won't do you any good. Enough of hate-mongering. Jeo aur jeney do :)
Re: Booker prize winner Indian Arundhati Roy calls Indians economic success a lie
I agree and disagree with her.
India's economic success in the last 10 years is unquestioned. However the economic success has not been fairly distributed. There is way too much poverty as she rightly points out.
Re: Booker prize winner Indian Arundhati Roy calls Indians economic success a lie
There is a huge difference between Arundhati and Asma Jahangir. Whereas Arundhati talks about poor and is a well known scholar, Asma is the worst opportunist and belongs to the same elite class, which Arundhati is criticizing.
Arundhati does not have any special ties with Pakistan to suggest that she is trying to promote our point of view, where as Asham Jahangir’s strong ties to India are very well known. Most of her “precious” time she is spent in India.
Re: Booker prize winner Indian Arundhati Roy calls Indians economic success a lie
Dude, you fell into the trap there. You cant critisize Indians for denouncing human rights activist Roy, while doing the same yourself of Jahangir.
Now,I would suspect she visits India because she is an advocate for peace, and going to India to meet actual Indians, would serve this end. They put her under house arrest in 2007, and in Pakistan, that only happens to people the ruling class doesnt like.
And just because you come from a particular class, doesn’t mean you endorse what that class has come to stand for. That’s like saying all people with the surname “Malik” must endorse feudalism.
Its not what your background is that determines your character, its your actions. And I suspect her actions are impressive considering Time Magazine counted her among their “Asian Heroes.” www.time.com/time/asia/2003/heroes/asma_jahangir.html
Lets show a little respect here. How many people do you know in Pakistan who advocate for minorities, disappeared prisoners, and abused women?
When the rest of her “Class” are content with sipping imported liguors and paying lip service to the victims of their policies, she has actually gone out of her way to stand up for the victims and actually took on those among her own class.
Re: Booker prize winner Indian Arundhati Roy calls Indians economic success a lie
guys, if Arundhati Roy is talking this bad about her own country India imagine her taking about Pakistan..
yes please, compare the living conditions of vast majority side-by-side and send it to Miss Roy may be she is not aware of the living conditions of 170M bad pakis.

lolz..... it is quite pathetic that when you had nothing else to say, you try to shift the focus on pakistan. Lolz... I still remember the comments of foreigners on a travel blog. They wrote that most if not all of what indians portray about their country is false. They said that after haivng been lured by "Shining India" tourist ads, many actually visited india. They said that the moment they went out the door of the plane, the stench of urine hit their nostrils and they almost vomitted. The same urine and fae___ smell was all in the airport and the surrounding area. Seriously, just do a google search and you will read lots of testimonials from western travellers......Lolz..... shining india.

No you brainwash your kids into thinking that terrorizing Kashmiris is your birth right and burning Muslim and Sikh men women and children alive in mass orgies of communal violence is actually a justifiable form of punishment and justice served...
No, you dont spread hatred of "other religion." But I guess the thousands that you people have murdered were all aberrations...
Re: Booker prize winner Indian Arundhati Roy calls Indians economic success a lie
Ms. Roy is sincere and honest, even if one may find her controversial. Her comment - "middle and upper class have escaped into orbit, looking down upon indigeneous people and asking "where is our bauxite" " is pretty much on the mark. Cannot question her logic. Just one example - Karunanidhi's daughter caugt up ion some corruption charges amounting to multi-billion dollars. We need to treat the poor much better if we are to make progress as a civilization.
Re: Booker prize winner Indian Arundhati Roy calls Indians economic success a lie
in general indians r secular-thats the way we r-people from all the faith work together-religion has taken a back seat in society- i still remember over a half group in my hotel management days in india used to eat beef-majority of students used to drink no matter wat faith they r from-but still india has its own share of problems-wat is getting common in middle class is show off-gap between rich and poor is increasing and these things should be taken seriously if they wanted the growth rate to be sustained
