Book & Movie Critique

if you could read a book, and then watch its film adaptation so you could critique them together in a paper - what would you chose?

:cb: i’m asking because it is an upcoming assignment for me, and i’d like some ideas… we’re free to pick from any literature, ranging from children’s stuff to political stuff.

Re: Book & Movie Critique

romeo juliet --

its really easy to do an assignment on that or for that matter any Shakespearean piece. Tons of stuff on the net and a million movies to choose from

Re: Book & Movie Critique

Harry Potter series :smilestar: They have just done so injustice with the books written so beautifully. When your reading each, seems as if u have entered into exactly a new world. But when you get to watch the movie :what: Remember Order of Phoenix? heck. Most prolly its becuase the movie makers tend to compact and concise the book into barely 2 hours. Which is just not possible fairly.
Another movie that I watched after reading the book was The Da vinci Code. Well I cant even recall it exactly, the book was so enchanting that even thinking about the book I can bet I was there all. The movie, I believe, was so so. If not good, not that bad either.

Re: Book & Movie Critique

OHHH HARRY IS A GOOD IDEA
But harry potter is so long to read

Re: Book & Movie Critique

ok..i love hp but there is this girl in our class, she’s a hp NUT! all she does is talk about hp, lotr, cedric diggory this that, and  i’m kinda wanting to move away from hp for that reason :cb:

i’d do romoeo and juliet becuz that’s one play we read and memorized sonnets from back in the day :bummer: but i have like an allergy to shakespearean stuff. i own most of the works in the sparknotes form :cb: but eekh, no go on that.

i was thinking maybe i should find a movie to some kids’ story, watch its animated film, and make a paper outa that. it’ll be short to read and watch, and i’m sure i’ll have plenty to say. but what are good kids movies then?

Re: Book & Movie Critique

the notebook
big fish

kids books there's always lemony snicket's a series of unfortunate events
any of the dr. seuss books and the movie adaptations

classical fairy tales like cinderella and little mermaid and the consequent disney adaptations

oh big fish has a book to it? i saw the movie and i liked it!! though i don’t remember it much :cb: thats a good idea!

yeah i’m sorta thinking to go with a disney 1, just cuz ihavent seen any in a long, long time..and it should be fun. did they ever make a movie for the goldilocks and the 3 bears? :hmmm: i have a bucket load of opinions on that story :cb: i’ll look into that maybe.

i saw the first lemony snickett movie when it came out :hehe: fun stuff. and i really wanna watch horton hears a who, when i have the time :hehe:

if i were to deviate from children’s literature though, what would you suggest khum?

Re: Book & Movie Critique

yeah it has a book to it…is it bad if i remember the movie more and just bits of the book? :bummer:

no they didn’t make a movie out of goldilocks…to short and not enough drama in it? they did make this movie out of red riding hood, where they presented view points of each of the characters…now that is an interesting movie.

oo i watched horton hears a who. loved it! not sure how the book is =/

hmm i haven’t seen the movie yet, but you could do a comparative analysis on the kite runner. there’s always dan brown’s da vinci code. there is a recent movie that came out, the other boleyn girl, you cuold do a comparison on the book and movie with that. 10 things i hate about you is an adaptation on shakespeare’s taming of the shrew. the elizabeth taylor version is pretty nice as well. the stepford wives IMO is a more interesting book than a movie. power of one, joy luck club, pride and prejudice, sense and sensibility, the matese falcon, count of monte cristo, the devil wears prada, memoirs of geisha, hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy have all had movies made out of them. the movie bedazzled is an adaptation of the book by marlowe, dr. faustus. though it hails from the same time as shakespeare, so the language is just umm well u can imagine

i really love the movie howl’s moving castle, and there is apparently a book about it too! then there’s the chronicles of narnia stuff. there is a teen book…blood and chocolate. great book…not so great movie.

Re: Book & Movie Critique

ooh lala khumar! you’re good at this game!

:hehe: i think its okay you remember the movie more..ya know cuz its visual!

lol i’m glad they didnt make a movie out of goldilocks :snooty: its such a immoral story. she breaks into the bears’ home, does everything she wants, and when they come home, she wakes up and runs away crying  i dont think there’s a lesson in there for lil kids at all! lol, anyways…

i havent seen any thing that came out recently - even kite runner although that was like december!!! you’re so right…10 things is so taming of the shrew. and hey…she’s the man with amanda bynes in it - that’s so the twelfth night. aha!

aw man i’d totally LOVE to do pride and prejudice :yummy: i have a week only to work on it, so i need somethin short … p&p is sorta novel-ish! i havent heard of howls moving castle :hmmm: whats that about? :hehe: blood and chocolate sounds sorta familiar..is that where everything turns into chocolate that the guy touches?

oh you know what i think…a good short story is beauty and the beast, and i know that disney has a newer version of it. have you heard the song from it ‘tale as old as time’ :cb: i think im gona go get that tomorrow!

Re: Book & Movie Critique

hehe a lot of the times i hear a movie is coming out and is based on a book so i end up getting the book before the release of the movie :cb:

ok…honestly…little mermaid and beauty and the beast are my FAV movies. yes :snooty: i loooooooooooove tale as old as time. omg :jano: sighs.

oh yes! she’s the man is such an awesome movie :cb: hehe no blood and chocolate is about teenage werewolves and their struggle :cb: look up howl’s movie castle. it’s an anime, and there should be a dubbed version on youtube  book is older than the movie though.

Re: Book & Movie Critique

:cb: i always try to read the book before i watch the movie..just so i totally know whats going on :cb:

b&b is so fun! i used to have the golden edition of the story book when i was lil and i read them SO much that all the spines wore out of the gold foil :cb: for some reason lol, i always felt sharam reading/watching little mermaid because she doesnt wear clothes…=/

 do you remember the pretty golden dress belle wears for their evening together :hehe: i wanted that dress, and i wanted to go to disney and see her  now i’m gonna be taking my daughter for that very reason one day.

:cb: shes the man is pretty fun yeah..it’s so completely shakespearean! for some reason ya know, amanda bynes never looks like she’s a day older than her teens. :hehe: i used to watch the amanda bynes show when i was pre-teen :hehe:

anime? :bummer: i have no liking for anime…all the emo kids at school would sit around with their anime stuff and i believe that is why i’m so prejudiced :bummer:

hehe me t ooooo! and then watching the movie and going…that never happend!

i know it’s like so freakin’ awesome! from the beginning to the end! i had golden edition of repunzle i think. must have ripped a page or two =/ haha awwww really?? i remember watching little mermaid for the first ever time and hiding under the covers towards the end when ursula is being evil and stuff!

omg do i ever! that was the single most best dress in the history of disney  awwwww that would be so awesome…mommy and daughter having a big day at disney :cb:

dude amanda bynes for soooooo annoying when she was a teen. lol…she’s better as she’s growing up lol.

hehe i know what you mean with the anime. but no this is like worth it. the story is really funny, and the animation is divine.

Re: Book & Movie Critique

:stuck_out_tongue: i miiight look into the anime stuff, but as i’m doubtin it as i say it :stuck_out_tongue: we’ll see, we’ll see.

lol yea ursula was so fat and scary!! :cb: oh and i remember i was scared of the page where gaston and the beast fight by the castle :cb:

i got the special edition of b&b today, i’m probably gonna watch it in the morning. it has the original 91 recording of the song by celine dion…and then some kiddo group called jump5 redid the song and gah, kharab ker diya! anyways..i’m SO excited about startin my paper cuz :yummy: ther’s so much to write about..from father-daughter fairy tale relationships to the guise of beauty.

did you ever have an assignment like this where you paralleled book/movie?

Re: Book & Movie Critique

no…my english assignments sucked  i’ll live vicarously through you :sheen:

Re: Book & Movie Critique

:cb: i think you mean vicariously

:bummer: i was gonna ask you for your assignments :cb:

Re: Book & Movie Critique

yeah that :smack:

ohh my assignments have nothing to do with what you’re doing ;hayaa:

Re: Book & Movie Critique

:chupki: this is my last lit assignment for the semester and i’m soo glad to be almost done now

:cb:you write more of psychoanalysis? :cb:

Re: Book & Movie Critique

lol no no analysis. more like digging up relevant research papers about some kind of issue and how it effects another issue and basically making sense of them =/ like one of my papers was about how lead effects a baby's development. stuff like that.

Re: Book & Movie Critique

:yummy: your work sounds like fun! :cb: probably because i don’t have to do it :cb:

when you’d started into college, did you take a lit class for gen. ed. credits?

Re: Book & Movie Critique

yes i did…and i don’t know why i took that particular class :smack: the good ones like courses about poe, or romanticism writers, or uff this female writer, or well courses like that would fill up real quick. so i ended up taking a elizabethan and jacobean theater class. now the language is the same as shakesperean language…so you can imagine how hard it was…i mean the plays were awesome! just reading them was such a chore :frowning: i took this humanities class, ancient greece and rome, and in that we read the old plays and stories…now that was fun. reading illiad and the odeyssey and medea..
