Eesa is my friend’s son and has been recently diagnosed with Thalasemia major. It’s a blood disorder but can be cured with a stem cell transplantation. There is a huge shortage of South Asian donors so docs have been unable to find a match for him.

**Please help Eesa by registering to be a bone marrow donor. **In most cases, no blood sample is required to register, instead a cheek swab is done.

We are actually planning to run a bone marrow drive at school through our club....inshaallah I will be registrating to become a donor...........I really hope your friend's son soon finds a match :( I can understand how finding a match can become difficult, many South Asians don't bother donating blood let alone bone marrow...

Now here is a really great example of why its a good idea to go for Cord Blood banking. Unbilical cord blood is usually discarded but if you go for cord blood banking you have it if the need should arise. Cord blood is rich in stem cells.

I did this with my first son, will go to the website and offer it. Its only half-asian cord blood but worth a shot.

Guac.. that would be great.. we are holding a lot of drives but no luck yet. :-(

MO3.. yeah they were going for the third baby but that didn't work out well either so now basically bone marrow or cord blood match is the only option.. Thank you soo much for your kind offer.. It may save a life :-)

This is very sad :(I cant even imagine what the parents must be going thro. May Allah keep his parents strong thro this hard time and find a way to save this lil boys life and give him quick recovery - Ameen

Its just not something we think about but it definitely makes u think about things differently. thank u for sharing

This might be a dumb question but do they find a donor from the same country or is it worldwide?

I think most bone-marrow donor lists are maintained counrty-by-country. And each country's donor list can be contacted for possible matches.

The most important thing is to get a close match and this is usually best acheived from a donor of the same nationality. Sadly, south asians do not donate nearly as often as people of other backgrounds so finding a matching donor is much more difficult.

Well seen as south Asian donors are very rare I'm sure or hope they will be contacting other countries to help this lil boy. there story is very sad and to see the father cry is just heart braking.

Ameen. Please if you can do nothing else, please pray for his health & recovery.

If anyone on GS is affiliated with any public organization, please look into whether your organization can run a bone marrow drive in their city. Once a person is registered, your info is enterered into the national bone marrow registry. If anyone was to match, ,they would be contacted. Inshallah they will find a match.

Your right Mama. In retrospect I really do regret not banking the cord blood of either of my babies. I was completely ignorant to the fact. Also I assumed it costs a lot to bank the cord blood? Any info on that?

Yes...we paid US $1200 for the collection and transport and then we pay a yearly fee of $95 for the cryogenic storage.

They do offer payment plans.

A Bone Marrow Drive for 1 year old Eesa Khairi is being held because he needs to find a match. He has Thalassemia Major which is an inherited rare genetic disorder which results in reduced rate of synthesis of one of the globin chains that make up hemoglobin.

The problem is that in the National Bone Marrow Registry there aren’t many donors from the South Asian background thus a creating a huge shortage, therefore we are trying to find a match for Eesa & for other people of this background. A simple bone marrow donation can save people from so many blood disorders including some cancers.

Please do come & see if you can save Easa’s or someone else’s life by being a donor. Bone marrow donation, like blood donation, comes with no long term side effect. To register, you need to only fill out the registration form and give a simple cheek swab. Anyone healthy between the ages 18 to 60 can register.

  • IMPORTANT* This drive is not exclusively for Eesa because if you do not match him & happen to match someone else in the national registry you are morally though not legally obligated to be a donor for that person.

quick update.. Eesa is scheduled for a bone marrow translpant in couple of months.. please remember him and his family in your prayers especially during the blessed month of Ramadan. :-)
