Bomb explodes at Hindu temple on Indonesian island

The blast on the outskirts of Poso, a coastal town on Sulawesi island, was caused by a low-intensity bomb that was placed in the home of the temple’s guard, said Poso’s deputy police chief, Maj. Andreas Wayan.

It detonated when the 40-year-old man, Nengah Sugiarta, opened the door, causing the roof and wooden walls to collapse, he said.

“Whoever did this wanted to create panic and spread terror here in Poso,” Wayan said, adding that police found black powder, nails, shrapnel and a battery at the scene, indicating the bomb was homemade.

Hundreds of onlookers gathered around the temple after the blast, which riddled Sugiarta’s legs and waist with shrapnel and wood. The Hindu man, who has been the temple’s guard for 15 years, was taken to a nearby hospital.

Some 3,000 security personnel have been deployed to the region, where Muslim-Christian clashes in 2001-2002 left more than 1,000 dead, following a resurgence of violence several months ago.

Most of the victims in the latest attacks, including market bombings and the beheadings of three school girls, have been Christian.

Wayan said it was too early to say who was behind Friday’s attack, the first to target Hindus in Poso, a city 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) northeast of Jakarta.

Police questioned three residents who were near the temple at the time of the blast, he said, providing no other details, reports the AP.

Truly sad incident. Hope the guard recovers quickly. Mullahtic fanaticism knows no bounds. It now is attacking the places that Muslims and non-Muslims all have revered for centuries.

Very sad, but a relief that no one died.

So the 'mullahtic lunatics' have owned responsibility for this incident or is it going to be blamed on Pakistanis again?

Ok, I will try to avoid Das Reich's venom and try to be objective here...

Its not in India, its in Indonesia, So blaming Pakistan may not happen.... PEACE on this front.
There wasn't more news on this either on Indonesia site or on Google..
The region is rife with Muslim-Christian rivalry, where report says that mostly its been Christians those are getting attacked in this region...
So nobody has attributed the blast to anybody till now..
Though intolerance to others religions in Muslim Society is increasing and its only Muslim society who can do something about it..... all others are outsiders and may not be of help...

With the islamic militants on the loose and creating havoc, it would nt be a suprise if the hindu fundamentalists take advantage of the situation and create difficulties for the minorities. What every militant should realise is that because of these wanton acts of terrorism they are alienating the community which is going to have very bad effects for the members of their own community.

Rash Guy you are hitting nail on its head, though that looks like the objective of these war mongers, where they do want communities to fight so that they can justify acts of intolerance they prepetuate in name of Islam (though in this case it's not confirmed yet that it was done by Islamic militants)...

Funny how blaming it on an Indian organization automatically equates to spitting venom, while blatantly blaming Muslims is considered perfectly alright. Some of you make it sound like the person left his business card stating I'm from such and such Muslim organization.

Where's the inquiry and where's the evidence for blaming it on Muslims? Or is it that any attack on any Hindu temple anywhere in the world equates to the doings of Muslims and the case gets closed.

yes ofcourse we should wait for a proper investigation. But you have to admit that the likelihood of some lashkar-e-this or al-something is very high.

Whatever the case happens to be, it'd look more sensible if people could start blaming others based on proof and evidence rather than mere conjecture.

Its a temple, RAW in Indonesia............ :)... Than RAW is like ISI a goverment organisation, it should have a geopolitical reason to do what they are doing.. we were looking at militant organizations in this...
Only RAW has been blamed in this thread for the blast and nobody has blamed anybody for these blasts in this thread.
At the same time, no body has blamed Muslims yet for this blast in press as well........
You are moderator, and a good one at that, you can have your strong biases, but here they are misplaced.......

Rahul, what does me being a moderator have anything to do with my views on this particular topic? Please don't forget I don't even moderate this forum. If anything, my status is the same as yours in this forum.

Rashguy blamed it on Islamic militants and you agreed with him. This clearly goes to show your bias. I never blamed it on RAW or on Muslims. I just don't feel this is the correct attitude.

The lack of discipline and investigation in nations like India and Pakistan is disgusting. People quickly jump the guns and blame each other, while no thorough investigation takes place. Furthermore, the crime scenes are tinkered with and the evidence lost.

I don't like it when people blame it on Muslims or anyone else for that matter. I strongly believe in the fact that proper investigation should be carried out prior to making any conclusions.

Sadiyah, I didn't agree with Rashguy that act was done by Islamic militants. I have clearly written that in case it hasn't been confirmed yet that it was done by Islamic militants.
I agreed with his point that acts of terrorism in name of Islam gives fodder to Hindu fundamentalists to create difficulties for minorities........
I also totally agree that complete invstigations should be done prior to any conclusions.
I did react to Das Saying RAW, come on now RAW in this case can't even be list of suspects.....

Helloooo, wake up. Hindu fundamentalists have long been taking advantage of the situation. In fact, they showed their fundamentalism a lot earlier than Qaeda fundamentalism. Remember shuddhi movement during British rule? How about Babri masjid demolition in 1992? And what Gujrat massacre?
