It does look like a pre-meditated attack on Karachi. They first attacked the procession and killed and maimed people there, and then they attacked Karachi economically by burning one of the most important markets.
It clearly was not a sectarian attack. It was terrorism by the same people who have been attacking Pakistanis all over the country, especially Peshawar.

He said the markets were set on fire one by one in a matter of minutes on M.A. Jinnah Road and the blaze raged from shop to shop and floor to floor.

KARACHI: The fire-tenders struggling to douse the blaze in Bolton Market here on Wednesday, 40 hours after the arson incidents triggered by a suicide attack at a procession of Youm-e-Ashur on Monday.
After the suicide attack at central procession of Youm-e-Ashur on Monday in which 43 persons were martyred, the miscreants’ set thousands shops on fire from Light House to Bolton Market. The arson attacks inflicted billions of rupees losses and left thousands jobless.
The fire tenders and snorkels are trying to extinguish the fire using chemicals and foam, which is still raging. Three markets have been completely destroyed, as fire is still raging in adjacent markets of Bolton Market. MA Jinnah Road has been closed for traffic from Jama cloth market to Tower. The fire brigade sources said rescue efforts to douse the fire will continues throughout Wednesday. The affected traders have demanded the government speedy rehabilitation process and financial assistance.

My profound condolences to those dead and wish the injured a speedy recovery. It is in times like this that we need to unite as humanity and try to do something for the suffering. It is just a shame that people are taking their emotions at the wrong targets...

Mufti Rafi Usmani says that this attack was done by Black Water.
Another conspiracy theory. Another attempt to hide the real enemies of Pakistan, the Taliban khawarij.
If it is Black Water doing it then how come Sindh police captured terrorists trying to smuggle ammunition in Sindh through NWFP? Read my post no. 16 on page 1.
Mufti sahab is correct in saying that burning of shops and other business in Bolton Market was pre-meditated. But he is wrong in identifying the culprits. Or may be he just "want" to put blame on some one other than Taliban khawarij. I heard an interesting conversation:

But other than this made-up conversation, everything else is true. Mufti Rafi Usmani does think this attack was done by Black Water. I read it in Jang.

Taliban commander Asmatullah Shaheen said that one Taliban activist Husnain Muaveya carried out the attack.
Shaheen said the bomber arrived in the south port city of Karachi a day earlier of the attack and he targeted the same place which was assigned to him.
**He said that Taliban leaders Hakimullah Mehsood and Qari Hussain had assigned the task to his group** and that is why he is claiming responsibility for the attack.
Asmatullah Shaheen had been associated with the splinter Taliban group headed by slain leader Abdullah Mehsood but later hejoined Baitullah Mehsood group. He was appointed chief of Jandola area in South Waziristan and has been in hiding since the forces launched operation in the region in October.
The same few maulvis and maulanas in Binore town have been Godfathers of Talibans and created groups like the Sipah-e-Sahaba, Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad. Where do you think "Punjabi Taliban" came from?

There is a dispute over how this massacre was carried out.
It is very easy to plant bombs with thousands of people around. So it could very well have happened.

KARACHI: The Karachi police are in a fix as far as the identity of the suicide bomber of the Muharram 10 procession attack is concerned, as the identity of all the people whose severed heads were found at the spot have been confirmed, but none of them have turned out to be the man they were looking for.
Sources said there is already a dispute between the police and the Federal Investigation Agency over the nature of the attack as the FIA officials have claimed that it was a planted bomb.
