Conservative Bollywood movies are not known for their sexually explicit themes and even now heterosexual kissing is comparatively rare in Bollywood films.

But the release of upcoming movie Dunno Y … Na Jaane Kyun is set to change all that. Roughly translated as Don’t Know Why, the film is the tale of a male model who goes to Bombay to make his fortune, only to discover that his fortune is with another man.
The advertising poster for the film depicts two men, naked from the waist up, embracing.

Dunno Y’s director, Sanjay Sharma, told the BBC he was confident the film would pass India’s strict censors.
“At the moment I’m not thinking about any political or censor problems,” Sharma said.

“I’m not afraid of anything,” he said. “I stand by my conviction.”
Sharma said he was moved to make the film by the trite treatment gay characters usually received from Bollywood.

Taboos surrounding homosexuality have been slow to change in India, a country where arranged heterosexual marriages are still very common.

But twelve months ago India’s High Court struck down the country’s anti-gay laws. This, together with the country’s rising middle class could be ushering in a new era of acceptance off- as well as on-screen in India.
