Bollywood's "Bride and Prejudice"

Anyone seen the BBC/A&E version of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”? That was a fantastic series. The director of “Bend it like Beckham” is releasing a Bollywood version - with a few twists to Austen’s original storyline.

Bollywood Austen film goes global, Helen Bushby, BBC, 11 July 2003

Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha has said her Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice will span several continents. Chadha, who begins filming next week with a cast including Devdas star Aishwarya Rai and Spider-Man 2’s Daniel Gillies, said Austen’s book was ideal for adaptation.

“Jane Austen must have been a Punjabi girl in a previous life,” she told BBC News Online. “Our version may have different cultures and settings but it’s still about people marrying from different backgrounds.”

With a budget four times that of her global hit Bend it Like Beckham, Chadha’s movie will include song and dance routines and locations including India, the UK and US. “Other British films are said to be ‘too small and inward-looking’ but this hopefully pushes the boundaries of what British cinema is,” she said.

Chadha’s film, renamed Bride and Prejudice, stays faithful to Austen’s original story, although the Bennett family become the Bakshis, and Mr Darcy becomes a wealthy American. His unsavoury friend Mr Bingley is still an Englishman - in this case a barrister - and according to Gillies, who plays him, his character will be “more despicable”.

Rai will play the equivalent of the book’s central character, Elizabeth Bennett. “My role as Lalita will be a great challenge,” she said. “But the film is essentially about people and relationships - it looks beyond culture - that is the charm of the story.”

“The pace moves quickly - more like a Western film, but the eight or so song and dance routines will be part of the narrative, like a Bollywood movie.”

“It will be a very cheeky film,” she added.

It follows in the very successful footsteps of Oscar-winning musical Chicago, and of course, Lord Lloyd-Webber’s West End hit Bollywood Dreams. Pride and Prejudice is a witty tale about the plight of the 19th Century Bennett family, which faces the uphill struggle of marrying off four daughters to suitable - and wealthy - husbands.

Chadha described it as “the perennial Indian story”, adding it was the “most obvious choice for a Bollywood adaptation”. As well as directing the movie she also co-wrote the screenplay with US writer Paul Mayeda Berges. “The idea of adapting the story came to me while I was doing the washing-up,” Chadha said. “I wanted to combine British film tradition with Bollywood - what better marriage than Pride and Prejudice?”

She added that by using three different continents, the story would also explore “global perceptions” about what different nations think of each other. Martin Henderson plays Mr Darcy, a role popularised by Colin Firth in both the BBC version of the book and Helen Fielding’s version, Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Henderson, who recently starred in horror movie The Ring, echoed Chadha’s sentiments, adding: “The story is so relevant to today.”

“It’s not just about class - it’s about the cultural aspects of the world as well.”

Can't wait to see it :)

jane austen should sue director sahab for stealing her ideas and again we are seeing another hollywood remake, the list just goes on and on, it would be something to see mumbai film industry making desi and original films.

2condly, this isn't the 1st time an authors ideas are being stolen lately a serial in india is being aired by the name of karishma and that storyline was stolen from a british based author and she is actually going over to india and suing em'..... 2rite she should.

Thanks, Hum Sa. :flower1: Me neither! Can’t wait for this one to be released.

Must be good !!

The A&E version of Pride and Prejudice has got to be one of my all-time favourite movies. I have it on DVD. :)

Actually, Bridget Jones' Diary is based on the same Pride and Prejudice. They even got Colin Firth playing the same role of Mr. Darcy.

As much as I enjoyed Bend it Like Beckham, I am not looking forward to the desi version of this classic tale. I think it will be ruined. Who knows though.

wow you have it on DVD, Mehnaz ? If you don't mind my asking, where did you buy the DVD version from? i've only ever seen the videotapes (they come in the series of six tapes). i don't even have the official videotape version, just taped it off the tv years ago:D In the years since it first aired, i think i must have watched it AT LEAST 20 times - if not more. i know this is pathetic but i have most of the dialogues memorized. :o Just found it so interesting.... on so many different levels - culturally/socially, Victorian England was so... unique. That whole 'class' structure in particular... peoples' arrogance because of their inherited wealth and land.

Anyways i hope this one proves to be interesting Insha'Allah... i can't wait for it to come out.

hmm...

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book. I hope they don't ruin it! I'm not a huge Aishwarya fan...

I cant wait to see it! Guridner Chadda is an excellent director…“Bend It Like Beckham” was an awesome movie which she directed :k:

I think its Pride and not Bride, as in the topic...

i so agree with you,iv read the book quite a few times now...but i still havent seen the film...erm,i'l see this first n then watch the 'bride&prejudice' when it comes out. i should get it from the local library*off she goes*

Spock, You are right - in Austen’s original, it is “Pride and Prejudice”, but Gurinder Chadha (the director) renamed the new version to “Bride and Prejudice”.

Extremely sweet of you.
Thank you, Punjabi Kuri :flower1: Trust me, you will NOT regret the time spent in watching it. Just be careful, though - there are two English versions out of “Pride and Prejudice”; the most recent one was done by A&E/BBC, and an earlier one was done by the BBC alone. The one by only the BBC really sucked - you’ll be really turned off if you watch that. The best one was the one by both A&E/BBC (starring Colin Firth as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet).

Please, if you have the time, do let me know if you see it and what you thought of it. :flower1:

You can get it from Blockbuster. If I remember correctly, it's around $50. I also have it VHS as I also taped it off of TV and I've also watched it a million times. :)

It's my favourite movie. If you liked this, then you should definitely watch Bridjet Jones's Diary. It's based on the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice. :)

hey thanx alot Nadia 4 warning me b4 hand,i havent got it yet but now i’ll def look 4 A&E/BBC one,and i’ll let you know what i thought of it.
Mostly i only keep reading the book again & again, becase sometimes the film is so totally different to what u imagined it to be tht it sometimes even puts you off the book,so i like sticking to my own imagination. I’ll def check this one out.

Thanx again:)

I absolutely loved the book! Can't wait to see the movie.

I also liked the book very much. It is my favorite Austen. The tension between darcy and elizabeth is palpable. A&E had a BBC version that was very good a few years back as well. With Colin Firth as Darcy.

Any hoot...good show...let's see when it comes out. Might be my first indian movie in years.
