Body to define rules for judges’ accountability

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council has formed a committee comprising Justices Rana Bhagwandas and Javed Iqbal to draft rules for taking “disciplinary action” against the judges of superior courts.
The council met here on Saturday with Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the chief justice of Pakistan. He pressed the need to make the council more functional and effective. A proposal to amend the present code of conduct, making it more elaborate, was also discussed during the meeting and the chief justice of the Lahore High Court was given a task to draft the law for the judges’ accountability. The council will set up an institution to receive complaints against the judges and decide them on merit. It was decided in the meeting that cases of inefficiency or corruption against the judges will be promptly dealt with in accordance with the law.
